Re: New owner of 1966 C10 Camper Special
Might make a new thread about this but figure I'll just add this here and see if I get any responses.
My truck is so smoky, especially when it starts. I haven't done anything to it yet but wonder what I should attack first to make it run a little cleaner. |

Smoking real bad on startup is usually bad valve seals. You could have some other oil control issues if it's smoking all the time

A valve job usually refers to cleaning up the valve seats on the combustion chamber side of the engine and replacing or cleaning up the valves.

Re: New owner of 1966 C10 Camper Special
You can change valve seals without removing the heads. It involves putting an air fitting in the spark plug hole. Air pressure applied keeps the valve from falling down when you remove the valve spring. I've never done it but there's videos on youtube.
Edit: You can also accomplish the same thing by feeding some rope in the spark plug hole while raising the piston until the piston and rope come up tight on the valve, holding it up. Last edited by bigmoe; 05-19-2022 at 09:38 PM. |

Re: New owner of 1966 C10 Camper Special
To add to Bigmoe's comment I changed out valve springs both ways, air and, in my case, an old spark plug lead - you will need to remove the valve springs to replace the seals.
It is really rather simple - don't be afraid to give it a go - and if it doesn't go according to plan take the head off and use the opportunity to do the valve job. Looks like a really nice truck. Enjoy! P.
