Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Got my new crossember and trailing arms back from powder coating and in.
Might be putting hold on the Blazer for a bit. My dad is trying to get his 69 short step put together before spring so gonna help on that for a bit.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Rear springs and shocks are in place now.

I plan on ordering my front end parts soon, really want to get that together and then I can start putting the body together. New tailgate, bed floor, bedsides, and front fenders waiting to go on. Planning on re-using the original doors which look to be pretty rust free.

The list is long, although I have the big items there are lots and lots of little things I'll need to buy before the end. I do have a lot of leftover stuff from building other trucks though.

Haha, that front bumper? Its gone now, it weighed a ton.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Things are finally going to get rolling on this.

Weather was good this past weekend and with fall coming I decided to primer and put raptor liner on the underside of the new bed floor before it installed.

Front crossmember and controls arms are getting picked up from the sandblaster on Friday. I had them powdercoated. Front disc brake kit and all new front end parts also arrived in the mail this week.

Rounded up my parts I had in my garage and hauled out to the shop where I'm working on the Blazer. Going to start assembly of the new bedsides, fenders, tailgate all shortly. The Suburban came in handy, it was packed right full haha.

Lots to do now.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Its the most this thing has ever resembled a Blazer in a long time today

Before taking off the bedsides and rear floor, I decided to hang some sheet metal. This thing has been blown apart so I wanted to make sure everything somewhat fits together first.

Really happy with how the hood, grille, and fenders went together. Some tweaking needed yet but pretty close

Doors need some work yet but pretty good fit. Bottom of passenger needs to move in a little bit yet but I don't have any more hinge adjustment so going to have to figure out something there.

All the new metal is Key Parts brand.

Thanks, I sure hope so.
Yeah the 4WD's are just as nice. Honestly, had this been a running project I don't think I would have done the 2wd conversion. Blank canvas on this one so figured what the heck.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Bed floor and bedsides off today.
Rocker boxes are solid throughout except just at the back where the end caps attach there is a soft spot so will be doing some repairs there.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

I couldn't help myself when some new wheel and tires came along for sale at a great price. I may run them on my 69 this summer so they just don't sit as who knows when the will be ready for the Blazer. 245/40/20 & 275/40/20.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Hello @hevy_chevy67. I am attempting to build a K5 blazer and I have started this fete with a C10 SWB frame, removed 11 inches. Can I get a few close-up pics of the frame, rear frame? I'm trying to figure out where the tub mounts go. Thanks in advance, Clark.

Yeah sure. I won't be able to until the weekend but I can grab some pics and measurements

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

Rocker box repairs are done and bed floor is bolted loosely on.

The boxes are good but had some rot right at the end. Chopped off and burnt in new pieces for the end along with new caps and sise support pieces.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

@hevy_chevy67, I would also like some frame measurements also. I visited Dino’s Git Down and saw a few blazer tubs. My c10 swb frame measurements and the repop k5 tub seems to be off. Any help would be appreciated.

Crap, I forgot about getting those earlier. Is there any particular measurements you want?

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

@ heavy_chevy67, that is a yes. Can you please (1) measure from the tip of the frame to the back of the frame rail (front to back). I would like to see how long the fame rails are. (2) Also can you please measure from each frame mount to frame mount, hole center to hole center? (Exclude the Radiator Support) The 1st tub mount to the second tub mount (38 1/2). The second tub mount to the 3rd tub mount (14 1/4). The 3rd tub mount to the 4th tub mount (47) and the 4th tub mount to the 5th tub mount (12). (3) can you please measure the mounts from left to right, hole center to hole center. This will help me out a lot. The measurements I gave are in inches. The 47-inch measurement may be 41-inches. I can send you a gift card for your time. If you have any questions I will PM my number for any clarification. Thanks a million.

There was a full frame with the dimensions and thread I remember seeing a while ago

Maybe search?

Not to sound harsh or a smart ass, but research is everything. I have done the search. I also have those specs. And from my search and from what I have found is that the c10 frame and blazer frame have the same exact specs. How can both frames have the specs with different wheel bases? Information is everything. Besides if you read some my other posts I am accumulating and documenting this information on a thread, to share with future c10 enthusiasts. If a truck friend wants to help, let them help.

I cut a short bed down and put on a blazer frame years ago and I had to cut 14 inches out of the bed to make it fit. I removed it from between the front of the bed and the wheel well.

Good answer, I was just trying to speed up your process, get out of drawing and actual fabrication, it’s in your head, now build it

You could change the wheel base by stretching or shortening the mounting locaction of the A arms and rear axle, taking into consideration the body mounts

You’re talking to a 74year old man that has years of experience with very little time left, but I will follow along to see the completed task, good luck. I’m sure you will find the answer you seek. You’ve come to right place to find answers with guys of unlimited knowledge in the 67/72 trucks with out the drama

I believe the difference is in the pickup has in the separate bed as the blazer has a integrated bed, as you know

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

I'll try and grab those measurements next weekend. Truck isn't at my house so I can only get out there on weekends.

I picked up my donor vehicle for the engine/trans. Picked up a 2009 Yukon Denali with a 6.2. I had planned on using5.3/4l60e i have lying aroud, but i feel like i got a good deal on this one, and its a 6.2 lol.

No snow here until I decided to go pick it up of course.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

@ hevy_chevy67, I have a gen 4 LY6/TR6060 in my 1968 C10 Stepside. I wanted a simpler drivetrain such as a the Gen 3 stuff. I like the fact that the Gen 3 (24X) PCM has the engine/transmission controls and drive by cable capabilities. If you need any assistance with wiring LMK.

Re: 1970 Blazer Build

@ jaros44sr, my recipe is as follows: I used a SWB C10 frame to start my K5 Blazer build. I cut 11 inches out of the frame (under cab area) to give the frame the 104 inch wheel base. SWB frames have 115 wheel base. For reference, I bought and installed a K5 blazer frame stiffener with the trailing arm mount-to ensure the rear differential was properly fitted/placed to a K5 Blazer. To proceed, I had the idea to buy a repop Blazer tub. I just wanted to check the placement of the original K5 Blazer mounts against the tub mount measurements I received from Dino’s Git down. I hope I explained my thought process. If you have any suggestions/ideas, I have a build thread going. Please type away. 3 ideas are better than 1. @ hevy_chevy, I apologize for interrupting your thread. Please proceed with your post. You have been very informative to me with your thread.

Thumbs up Re: 1970 Blazer Build

The 6.2/6L80E combo will make it move! 400hp and good gearing with relatively low weight is a recipe for performance.
