Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

What's the Black Knob outboard left of the Dash for?
I had to replace the Headlight Switch on my '68 C/10 Stepside last year. The rheostat controlling Instrument Lights had gaps in its dimming range. I noticed the ersatz switch was a lot balkier when pulling it On/Off. Seems to catch midway.

Fog lights I have yet to rebuild them . The ones that came on the truck when I bought it are from a Mack .

Cool.
I had a chrome shop cut Fog Light Holes out of a 67-68 front bumper so I could mount rectangular fog lights inside the bumper, like parking lights on 71-72s. It's on my '67 K/10 Suburban now. The later model bumper didn't fit my '68. Pix are on my old computer.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Today I had a couple of my good buddies from work over to help with my ''Truck Rodeo''.
My '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 has been sitting on a slope in my driveway with a dead starter since September.
I thought of deadsticking it backwards into the intersection and trying to pop the clutch in reverse. With Power Steering and Power Disc Brakes, ''Deadsticking'' is the operative work. These systems don't work without the engine running.
So I ran a 10 foot chain from the hitchball on my '68 C/10 Stepside to the D/S spring shackle on the Jimmy. My larger friend steered the dead Jimmy, while my younger friend acted as Road Guard. We towed it 100 feet to myb upper driveway, just off the street and disconnected the chain. Then I glided downhill into my repair pad in front on the engine shed.
Good enough for today.
To get at the Starter or Solenoid, I have to pull my Hedman headers. They also need burned out gaskets replaced. And the last time we worked on the Hedders, we forgot to hook up the oil dipstick bracket.
Then I want to paint the Hedders with White stovepaint, like Smokey Yunick.
Mission creep. I know.
At least it's in a safe place to work on, and the scorching sun of September is gone.
Sorry, I got too involved for pix.

A Truck Rodeo, is any time you need to move one or more non-working trucks around the lot, with one that does run.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Putting new rotors, bearing and pads on the 72. It still had the original rotors, the truck only has 76k miles. Before the drivers side rotor goes on I need to remove the steering box and rebuild it as it is leaking.

Cool how the wood grain dash matches the wooden wheel.

Looks good! I bought that wheel and horn button from LMC many years ago, for ~ $300.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Installed the 1 1/2 spacers on the rears today had to use extended lug nuts because the original wheel studs are short . The wheels were way too far in the well . I also got the adjustable trac bar but didn’t get around to that today . I bought the CCP dual adjustable bar .

I also put the Chevy blanket in I was going to attempt an actual cover out of it but it’s a little too short . I’m going to order another and have my upholstery guy sew them together . Then I can do the rest myself .

Continued trying to rebuild the rear brakes on my ‘67 GMC…started on the right side, and today I pulled off the left side…I need a bunch of pictures and instructions that aren’t in the manual…. ☹️

The whole truck or the seemingly endless brake job?

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

The large shoe does the majority of the braking, as it stops against the anchor. The small shoe forces it to do so. I remember it as "Big goes to the Back". I was state licensed for brakes, and had the NIASE (before they dropped the "NI" to make it ASE) brake mechanic cert, and I still used mnemonics like this when I was working as a mechanic.

Thumbs up Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I installed the reproduction one piece tailgate seal made by Counterpart on the 70 Blazer. It fit well, and the tailgate shut easily.

Love it. Also like the nod to Smokey Yunick. Here's one of his innovations that mostly went with him to his grave:

Thanks for the Hot Rod article. Perhaps if they can miniaturize it, that can be the powerplant for Hover Boards.

[And I corrected Smokey Yunick's spelling.]

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Worked on the carburetor. It's seeping fuel from the fuel filter nut, which has been J-B welded in for decades. I took it off and ground around the nut and puckied it up with J-B weld again. Now, it's just a tiny seep. I'm looking at carbs online but want one calibrated for my truck, not a generic replacement. Don't want an Edelbrock or Holley, I want it as original as possible like the rest of the truck.
