Yes, and a beautiful example as well! Hauling heavy and looking good doing it (although truck seems to be empty)

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

I used to see a lot of tandem axle Chevy dump trucks in both the '67-'72 and '73-'87 body styles. Usually a 8-10 yd. bed, 427, 5X4 transmission. Must have been a common spec..

That is what the old GMC looked like that we had years ago. It was a 350 4sp with a 2sp rear. I pulled a 40 foot cattle trailer with it almost every weekend when I was 13 yrs old.

I could see that being a perfect use for a tractor like that. I could use one like that now and have a variety of 5th wheel trailers

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

Got this '68 C60 a while back. 366/5+2 with a 16x8 dumping flatbed with grain box sides. Old farmer gave it to me for free because it "wasn't running right". Has 6 new tires and a new Edelbrock 650 on it so can't complain. Found it had 4 dead holes, engine tear down revealed a worn out timing chain and 7 valves bent from hitting pistons. Luckily no other damage. Threw in a new set of valves, 3 push rods, a timing set, and a new oil pump, now it's running great! Tear-down also revealed the engine is bored 030 over. Most of the body is really solid, small amount of rust around step/fender and dented passenger fender. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do with it. Hauled a little bit around the farm and for my neighbors construction company. Will probably eventually either sell it or build some kind of car hauler out of it for my race truck.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

Can't beat that! That motor must have never been revved real hard for a chain bad enough for pistons and valves to meet but not jump. I'd imagine you could sell that grain body/hoist rig when the time comes.

Nice! Looks like a JH-9500 with an oil field body. Ever seen how they load those things?

Like this:

http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pi...6dc10064sn.jpg

There is a powerful winch right behind the cab, and there is a large roller across the back of that beaver tail flatbed deck. You hook the winch cable to your skid (with the machinery on it) and it will drag the skid to the rear of the deck, then up to the roller, then on to the bed. If the skid is really heavy, it will pull the front wheels off the ground. Usually those bed also have a 5th. wheel recessed into the deck to pull a semi trailer too. Also, if you look along the sides of the bed you can see gin poles that you can make an A frame out of. Handy trucks!

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

Huh, I guess I never put that much thought into just what they'd be hauling. I knew they all had the winch and the bed tails are designed to skid the load up, but I assumed they were hauling pipe not equipment on skids. I guess I never saw one loaded up. I see now these were really their everything rigs. I know they always seem to have a pipe front bumper. Is there more to that? I realize pipe is what they have and what they weld, but it must serve some purpose other than just being a better bumper.

No idea on the front bumpers, but you are right. Most of these trucks have them. There appear to be some sort of eye to run a cable through or something.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

When I landed at an air base in Danang back in the fall of '69 I seem to
remember a Marine Corps "C" series Chevy or GMC 6X tractor hauling a "cattle car" and waiting for a shipment of FNGs.

I swear it was painted in gloss paint instead of flat.

As I was in transit, and in country for only six days, I never saw it again.

Can any of you other geezer vets out there verify this or was i just dreaming?

Yes! There is a picture of one of those tractors in the book 'GMC Heavy Duty Trucks 1927-1987' by James Wagner. They were U.S.M.C. 1968 GMC J-7500 6X6's with Coleman front drive axles and D637 Toro-Flow V-8 diesels.

That's really a great little book, still in print and available on Amazon.

I figure the Marines bought a bunch of those tractors.

I agree. I also have the book. Even though I wish it went into deeper depth in some places, there is a whole lot of great info in there.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!

in reference to post 565, sometimes the hole in the bumper has a 3/4 or 7/8 cable with a loop on it. Just behind the bumper it forked, one cable to the right and one to the left, from there the cable went around the frame behind the rear spring shackle of the front springs. That way if you are stuck or cating up a hill you don't pull the frame horns off and maybe the motor and trans with it.
