Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
My job today was to run the wires to the starter and the sensor located behind it. There is an open hole at the back of the block, probably for a locating pin. I ran the wires through that.
Had to take the plug off the sensor wires to fit through the hole so I had to make a tool to take the plug apart. I used some .035 welding wire flattened on the end for my tool. The wires can never get too close to the exhaust this way. |

Making Great progress!! Looking nice and neat. I remember when I fit my aftermarket grille there was a lot of massaging the holes for it. Steve

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
the LS engine has 2 knock sensors under the intake in little "wells". the wells are prone to filling with water because the rubber sealing grommet for the wire gets hard etc and allows water to sit in the wells. this cause rusting of the metal knock sensor housing and eventual failure of the sensors. too bad they engineered it like that but it's too late now. anyway, when or if they go bad the intake manifold will need to come off for access. some I have replaced were rusted so badly they were hard to get out as they broke apart. the little harness also needs to be replaced in order to get soft grommets that have a chance to seal. I usually use a little "the right struff" RTV on the grommet sealing surfaces against the engine and then build a dam of RTV around the grommets to direct any water past instead of into the area. on a stock engine there was a thick piece of foam at the front and rear of the intake to try to stop the flow of water into the area i guess. it is usually hard and deteriorated as well so I usually live without that.
anyway, it sounds like you got it figured out so carry on doing great work |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Thanks guys, DS, I had a new cam installed by a local performance shop (Excessive Autosports) because I am not a mechanic and am not familiar with the LS. They told me when they take an engine apart they always replace the 2 sensors and foam under the intake since it's apart it just makes sense to do it then.
I'm an air head and forgot about that and the plugin hanging off the back, lol. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Got the steering column in and the double D shaft between the column and gearbox. Of course I had it clocked wrong so I got to take it apart and turn the shaft 90 degrees. That's following the Ididit instructions.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Got the brake master cyl. in today. Before I did that I double checked the steering and tightened all the set screws and bolts. I also made sure the gas line and exhaust sensor were in good spots. I also tripple checked the shifter linkage to the transmission from the column. I hooked up the vacuum line to the brake booster too.

I too refuse to do something just once!
Glad it's moving forward.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Lol, seems I have to check everything over a couple times before I cross it off my list.
to do list. Every time I think of something I stop what I'm doing and immediately write it down. Even very small stuff. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
My list was getting shorter but I've thought of stuff so even after crossing off some stuff it's still long. lol.
Did a couple small things yesterday, E brake is now hooked up and works. While it was up on stands I checked all the bolts underneath. I always leave stuff loose incase I need to wiggle it or remove it. Got my transmission wires hooked up after cleaning their plugs that were full of sanding dust. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Got all the brake lines hooked up except for the 2 rubber hoses to the front wheels, I'm going to get new calipers and pads and hoses for that.
Had to go out at 11pm last night to check if I had tightened the last line I put on. It was only finger tight, I got it tight then I could sleep better. lol |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
What a good thing to do, if leaving bolts loose, is use a paint pen on the ones that are torqued up but not on a loose one. Then it is easy to find the ones that still need a final torque. Sometimes I will use a plastic cap on the loose fastener if I don't have a paint pen handy.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Been doing a few little things, got my wiper arms and electirc motor mounted.
The 2 little holes that bolt it up just did not align with the 55 threaded holes. I ended up cutting open ended slots in the wiper mounts, this way I could have both bolts part way screwed in, then slide one end in place, slide it far over to one side, lift and slide it back to center on the second bolt. Then simply tighten the bolts. Also, Somehow my hands just would not fit up in there well. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
It had an antenna from way back in time, so I decided to keep one.
I also put on the rear bumper today, as well as the tail lights, they are LED. The static cling of the dust at 15% humidity is crazy, electric shocks when I touch anything too. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Went through all my gas line fittings today and made sure they were clean, properly located and properly tightened up. I also removed the filter/regulator and made sure the paint was gone where it bolts on, also scraped paint off another place where I am going to ground wires, got to have really good grounds with LED lights, always want good grounds anyway. lol.
I put a piece of green tape on every fitting I checked and tightened as soon as I finished that particular one,That way I don't keep checking over and over. lol I got my gas fill neck installed today and I ran a copper wire to ground the fill pipes to the frame so there is never a static charge. Put in my gas gauge sender too. I put in a few boards just to check to be sure all the hoses cleared. I still have not decided what wheels to use, I think about it some every day. |

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
Got a puzzle, is there anything that bolts on to this hood latch plate? I cannot see any wear on it and there are 2 bolt holes. I have the factory assembly manual and it does not show anything. I would think there would be wear after thousands of times getting slammed closed.

Re: norms 55 chevy pu build
I had someone tell me that it is a hardened piece of metal rivited to the hood and that is all there is to that latch striker plate.
