Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Here's an old Squarebody GMC 6500 still putting in a hard days work serving her community as Fairmont, Nebraska's main pumper sure we have a crew cab Kenworth that's at least 7 years old but they take the ol' GMC to field fires, house fires, you name it before they'll break out the Kenny because the GMC is lighter and older than the Kenworth and she's got 2 engines both gas but from what one of my Buddies who used to be on the department said that the Smeal pump is F**d powered but I'm unable to confirm or deny it at this time if I can get any more shot of her I'll post them up here

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
My Department in Valley NE had a Smeal pumper/tanker with a separate pump engine, and it was a Ford gas V-8. The nice thing about that truck was it had pump and roll capabilities, it was great for weed fires in road ditches, you could drive along and hit fire with the dual deck guns and never have to walk in the black!
Unfortunately the powers that be deemed it too old to keep around, so we sold it to Verdigree NE. FD and it is still in service.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Nice to see she's still a hard worker. That's what that high ratio of service vs use is supposed to be all about. Powers that be are often just that and that's about all. Probably more about the town's image than anything.
That fire apparatus company has it's pumper package set up to use the Ford industrial engine I suppose. The same unit goes on whatever brand truck.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
You are learning well, but always more I could teach you. There is nothing bigger than Chevy 90 or GMC 9500. What I meant was you didn't include the bigger series in your title. There were no C90s

Looks great! That's be a nice looking conversion. The best I've seen. Not an awkward part about it, like most I see. Looks meant to be.

Nice truck. Wonder what is under the hood. I had a chance to buy a '79 like it once and it was a 3208 Cat.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
That really is a very nice heavy Chevy. Do you know the story on it? I'd guess it is a diesel by the stack and probably not a Detroit. Might be a 3208. What years did they offer the John Deere engine?

The Deere diesel was offered very briefly in 1985.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Thanks Bob. I did do a Google search after asking. It seems there were a couple cases where GM, Detroit, and JD tried mingling. Pretty neat. Too bad they couldn't get anything put out. I read some about the "Big Al", Allis Chalmers, truck engine too.

That's a great picture. I like to see that folks have been keeping these trucks alive all along, nothing new. You should post this picture in the 67-72 forum in the vintage pictures thread

The 71 C50 had a 350 in it and a 4 speed, vacuum brakes, Already had the engine rebuilt once and it's only 4 years old in this picture (1975), Had had a honey dipper on it when we got it. Took quite a while to get rid of the "scent"

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
People look today at what gas engines powered many medium and bigger trucks and wonder how they did that. It was what they had and they got the job done. The smaller motors could strain through it but you didn't expect huge miles out of it.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Still amazes me how Chevy had only 235-6's in their Tractor-Trailers back in the early 50's but like you say, they got the job done.
