Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
i like the truck and I like the steady progress. Where do you think i should get a windsheild on the truck? i have one someone shot a hole through it looks like they shot at someone from inside the truck because no hole in the interior.

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
The truck is basically original when I purchased it. To the best of my knowledge it is an upper factory radiator hose. I have seen them on other trucks. The two chevys I had, had standard rubber hoses. Maybe a GMC thing I don't know.

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
I would check with the vendors that supports this web site. The other option is to search craigslist.org, look thru the auto parts section or for someone parting out a truck.. The biggest problem you will run into with older windshields is moisture getting between the panes of glass and turning the glass white. It usually starts around the bottom edge of the windshield.

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
This is a shot of an original 72 GMC with the same metal upper hose. When I purchased the truck I thought it was something someone cobbled up, but now I too think it is a GMC setup.

Hey 115-K10:
What the heck is the additional pully over on the other side of the alt. in the picture posted? Looks like a some type of smog pump? |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
Its a hydrolic pump for a Meyers snowplow. I hope to use the setup on the K10 restoration I am doing.

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
No wonder I haven't seen such a device. Don't usually get much snow down here in Georgia, about 3 weeks ago we got a wopping 2-1/2" and most of that melted by the end of the day, that hydrolic pump would come in very handy up north where ya'll get snow up to and past your eyeballs.
Thanks you for the enlightenment. |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
chevys and gmc Kseries trucks used the metal upper radiator pipes, alot of the time there missing and a replacement hose is there. I belive they used them from 67072 in anything 4x4... I'e seen em on blazer, burbs and trucks

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
Well it is a rainy mess here in Georgia today... so there are no honey-do projects. Off to the shop to have fun....This was going to be a pictureless update...but I know you guy's are addicted to automotive porn (pictures).... so here are some pictures:
Installed distributer, wires and vacuum hoses. Since I installed the transfer case drop the distributer is dang close the the firewall , maybe a 1/16" clearance. Hopefully there won't be problems after startup (breaking distributer caps). Keeping fongers crossed....also installed the transmission shift linkage... |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
More picture:
I cleaned up and painted the 15x12 GM 4x4 ralley wheels....A guy local to my area had some 35x12.50 BFG All Terrains for sale at a decient price...so threre is new shoes for the project.....I also have some 33x12.50 super swamper on 15x10 aluminum wheels just in case I don't like the look of the 15x 12 rims (also worried about the stress on the ball joints). |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
And more picture's:
I cleaned up and repaired some rust thru areas (around the front lower mounting brackets) on the front fender wells. I por 15'nd the rusted areas and made a patch panel to tack in on the left fender well. When I tried to tack in the patch it caused the POR 15 to ignite.....I would suggest not doing this (tacking to POR 15'ed metal) due to the nice little smokey fire that starts and not to mention it is an isocyinade which ought to be real bad to breath....so instead, I filled in the areas with propoxey (like JB Weld) and sanded down to match the surrounding areas. Hopefully this will work. I also undercoated the outside fenderwell area. |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
Well I couldn't stand it any longer and had the 35x 12.50 tires mounted. I ended up mounting them on the factory 4x4 rally 15 x 8 rims. This is an FYI for you folks. The BFG 35 X 12.50 AT's would not mount on 15x 12 rims. According to BFG the largest rim the 35 x 12.50 AT's will fit is an 15 x 11. The 15 x 12 rims where just too wide and the tire place could get the bead to set. The 15 x 10 aluminum rims I have, one of the rims have elongated bolt holes....so until I can find a replacement rim for this rim, these aliminum rims will sit in thew corner and collect dust. The factory 4x4 stock rally's will half to do..here is another piece of hard learned info. (insert $$$$) When looking at used aluminum automobile rims other then checking for squareness, dents, scrapes etc, make sure the bolt holes are not elongated due to someone running the wrong lug nuts.
So here are some pictures of the truck with the new tires mounted....man this truck is going to look awsome when finished..... I will be driving around in this truck smiling like a the old cheshire cat...... |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
looks good.. I like those rims (or mine too!)
12" tires on 10" is almost to dorky looking as well... I tried my 10.5's on 10" rims and it was too dorky.. The sidewall looks better tucked in a little...

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
A few picture of a little progress. I need to prime and paint but it has been to cold, too humid or just raining. So I have been doing the smaller items:
Cleaned up and painted the brake vacuum booster, preportioning valve, new master cylinder and front fender wells... heck I installed the doors to make them easier to work on and started stripping paint from the front fenders. |

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 rebuild
Well I haven't posted for a while now....Since it has gotten warmer I have been doing very long honey do list... Since 90% of the honey do list is complete I did a little work on the truck. So for those of you out there who are interested, here are a few picture updates on the truck.
I patched the 2) aux fuel tank holes in the bed sides, stripped and expoy primed the front fenders, painted the fire wall, interior, back of cab and outside front of bed.. I have gotten the bed set back down on the frame and bolts installed but not tightened. I will finish paint the inside of the fenders, install them and do the finish body work with it all bolted together or atleast that the plan for right now. |
