What? So, you caught me! I'm really only here to annoy a few folks and talk about trucks.

Re: Your theft protection setups
I know this threads a little old but I was just thinking about theft prevention. Reading here how some have hidden switches in the cab. How do people break into these trucks aside from breaking the glass?

Re: Your theft protection setups
I for one am glad this thread got revived. Personally, I would be very upset if my truck was stolen, mostly because even though I've only had it for a while, it has a lot of "me" in it. I've cleaned it up, fixed all sorts of little things, and made plans to do more.
Nothing is foolproof, but as someone mentioned, thieves are usually in a hurry, so anything that slows them down helps. Trouble is, we are not talking about run-of-the-mill Honda Civics, or F*rd F150s that are stolen for joy rides, but collectible vehicles that may be stolen to order. Even if it can't be started because of some sort of kill feature, your truck could still be towed. With all that in mind, I think it's best to remember "Out of sight, out of mind", and lock the truck in a garage. I'm in the process of getting rid of the crap in my garage so that I can put the truck in there to protect it from the weather, and from thieves. And yes, I do have a kill switch and a club.

A Locked Garage, a battery cut-off device, a kill switch, a fuel cut-off and a 357 model 686Plus.

Re: Your theft protection setups
Around here I leave all my vehicles with the keys in the ignition. If you need it just bring back with gas in the tank. I don't even lock my house. Last time we went on vacation I had to search for front door keys (I did find them & I did lock up). Of course, out here everyone carries so that's one "system", I guess.
With that said, I will install a kill switch when my truck is done & I'm thinking about those GPS trackers! |

Re: Your theft protection setups
If someone wants it bad enough to steal it then they will find a way to do it. My truck is set up to run on gas and propane. I have a switch to go between the two. All i have to do is leave the switch in the in between position and it wont start.

Re: Your theft protection setups
The wing window is one way, you can just use a screwdriver and push up the latch. on my 70 custom camper they just pushed in where the latch is and opened it in reverse, window always whistled after that one. But they are also very easy to open with a slim jim or coat hanger on the lock.

Re: Your theft protection setups
I find that a clutch pedal takes care of about 90% or better of the idiots that would try to steal anything.

Re: Your theft protection setups
Has anyone installed a plate over the starter to avoid someone with a screwdriver just popping the hood and reaching down and starting it?

Re: Your theft protection setups
Here they are pulling trucks up on flat beds and driving off. Mostly diesels but any truck for that matter. I was thinking of getting a wheel lock or some sort of boot. Not sure if that would stop them either. Has anyone tried these?

Re: Your theft protection setups
Get an appraisal, get your truck's value where it needs to be....then get your insurance up to date.
After that add a hidden kill switch and a gps tracker, then use your head on where you leave it. After that, its all over......go back to bed, your insured...and spending too much time or effort on theft control will lessen the fun value of your truck....in my opinion. If the worlds best auto thief decides he is going to take it.....he is going to take it. all Good Coley

Re: Your theft protection setups
When I got mine it had quite a bit of 'diy' theft protection on it. The bolt holding the column shift in place was replaced with one easier to remove, so the truck was left in gear and the shifter carried around by the owner. He switched two of the bolts keeping the steering wheel aligned with the steering column and drilled holes in the steering wheel, so that they attach from the outside, instead of inside the column, and used bolts that have a head you can screw/unscrew by hand. He would take them out as well, so the person trying to steal the truck would be stuck in one gear, and the steering wheel would be mostly useless. As if using a column shift wasn't enough deterrent...
