Gas Tank Relocation

Has anyone got any experience with relocating the fuel tank to the driver's or passenger side in front of the wheel well on a fleetside? I've already got a custom built (not done very well) tank on the driver's side and I'm looking at reworking it and putting another on the passenger but I can't find anyone else who's done that. I hate to give up my spare tire location.

On the GMT400s, (88-98) trucks, GM put the fuel tank on the left side in front of the rear wheel, and inside the frame rail. The tank on my standard cab long box 98 is 34 US gallons, and the filler comes through the side of the box between the cab and the wheel housing.

Does anyone know if this will work on the 67-72s?

I'm using an CPP aluminum tank mounted in the rear which gives a little more ground clearance by being tapered at the bottom rear of the tank. The gas door is from a late 80 Chevy truck and the cover for the fuel filler tube in the bed was from a late 90 Mazda truck.

On my 67 longbed, I used a 70 Blazer fill neck/ cover along with a piece of the outer panel for the rubber seal to fit.

I just did the blazer tank install this last weekend. It went pretty easy. I still need to notch the bed cross member and add a gas filler door but step one is done.

I like the idea of a gas fill behind the rear side marker or the tail light. On my 1968 Chevy C10 shortbed there is no lights that are at the rear side marker so that would be a nice area.

Does anybody sell kits for either of these areas or have any detailed pics of how they did theirs?

This is on my list of next things to do items but I am having a dilemma on the fill options. My truck is a short bed step side and I really don't think going out the side is practical. If I have to do the in the bed foor I will but has anyone ever done something behind the license plate like the old cars of the day?

I had the same problem with my stepside, so I opted to install mine on the inside of the bed instead of in the floor. I also eliminated the bolts holding the bed on for a cleaner look. You can stand right at the back of the truck to fill it with not problem, you don't even have to remove the cap. I'll post a few pictures.

I ended up going inside the bed but still reachable from the side of the truck. I have since tack welded it in place and will be doing a spray-in bed liner on top of that.

I haven't tested it yet (hopefully soon). I did run the main vent line to the cap and smaller lines from the two side vents to one-way fuel valves that I ran up to be higher than the tank. You can see both in my pictures. From what I read this prevents fumes from escaping and allows for faster filling.

I did the 69 Camaro gas tank. It hangs down a bit low but I really didn't want cut a hole in my or the side of my box. It fills behind the license plate via a hinged (mid 80's Monte Carlo) license plate mount.

Yeah I dont really want to put it behind the license plate because I dont want to bend over every time I want to get gas. Dont want to cut a hole in the side of my bed either is why i was looking to put it through the rear side marker light.
