Why did you buy a squarebody?

They are easier to work on than the newer stuff and I love flat sides and hard edges.

Also a bonus that my V30 is emissions exempt.

I couldn't afford a muscle car and it was the most affordable thing that still held some of the styling/feel from that era. Also, my dad had a late 70's longbed that i have good memories of.

I bought my 89 because I was tired of the newer trucks that I have had not holding up. I also remember just about everyone in my family having one of these at one time or another, and they always seemed to have pretty good luck with them. Finally, ask a kid to draw a picture of a truck and they usually draw something pretty close to the old squrebody.

I replaced a '76 Jeep wagoner with a '73 Suburban 454/TH400, I loved it. I had it about 5 years, while I had it I got to want'n a CC dually but didnt have a real use for one. a few years back I built my Girl friend a drag car. one day I stop'd by a freinds car lot to see bout some wheels he had and a ratty look'n '87 CC Dually . at first he said if I would bring the 454 back to him I could have the truck, after I drove it home and clean'd it up I call'd and ask'd what he'd take for the motor. we agreed on $1500. since then I've updated the grill add'd 4 bucket seats from a conversion van. when I get home I'm get'n 22" TowNasty wheels and air bag'n it ! 8.5 MPG but it pull's the race car like it aint even there .
I have two V8 S10's, one gets bout 20 MPG but I still drive the Dually the most .

I wanted a GM crewcab 4x4 with a straight front axle and fuel injection.(throttle body) I had no choice but squarebody! The next body style (88-98) (92-2000 crewcabs) is the ONLY GM truck body style that I DON'T like, and anything newer than 2000 was not only too pricey, but also had IFS which I'm not a fan of for a 4x4. I bought a 1990 Chev V3500 crewcab.

When I was growing up my dad had a 78' LWB Scottsdale. I always loved riding in it, because I could see more out of it than in our other cars. I've always been hooked. So, now that I'm out on my own and have the means to buy and take care of one, I did! Wish it was a 73-80, because I love the round head light look (74 in particular, my brother-in-law had a nice lifted 74' with a 454 when I was little, too), but my 87' suits me just fine!

I was born in 1980, so these trucks were new or still in heavy use growing up. I have *always* liked them, probably because my father has owned at least one my entire life. I can still remember him replacing his 77 with a new K20 in 84 (the 84 is still in the family, too). They’re about as “modern” as I need a truck to be, as I feel the later platforms got too car-like and the quality went away. Have I mentioned that they look totally awesome?

Why I own my current one? I had an 88 K1500 as my first road-driven truck… and I quickly grew to despise it. Couldn’t put a load on it‘s soft little springs, the boxed part of the frame was rusting through, that model doesn’t have much in the way of styling, and to top it all off it had this weird IFS stuff where a front axle was supposed to be. So I swore off the “new” trucks and half-tons (Real trucks start at ¾ ton, people), and started looking for a 73-87 project. The rest is a long, convoluted tale more appropriate for a build thread.

I've been around them my entire life there are probably about 4 in working order at my gpa's place 2 parts cab forwards and one parts complete truck. Dad owned an 84 growing up and it was what I learned to drive in as well as drove for the first year of my driving experience. I had a 66 elcamino and stupidly sold it. Since I haven't been able to find another one I knew a 73/87 is the truck was the next project I wanted.

Fairly simple. I have owned older 60's Fords, a couple of late 50's GMC's and even a 48 Dodge once. I hate the Fords and Dodges of the 60's and 70's.

Couldn't find an affordable (and decent) 60's Chevy 1-ton so I went to the square bodies. Still enough of them around, affordable with parts available and just old enough not to require a degree in computer science to work on!

Hard to believe though that even a 1990 vehicle these days is 20 years old!

I can recall the 79 Chevy I have when they came out new; I was long out of H.S., and my 85 was new I was recently married. Now the 85 is considered an antique and the 79 with the round headlights is a collectible?

Somewhere in-between these classes of antique and collectible is where I fit in these days! Older than dirt and blessed to be above it.

haha, no problem man. i feel you on the gringo part, i am pretty light skinned, so when i cruise around playing them i get some weird looks. haha

No doubt. The Fall Guy truck was my favorite 1979 1980 1981-1982 1983 -1984 usually LWB GMC, but sometimes SWB, and ocassionally even a Chevy truck as a kid!

When I was about 10 and started to really notice trucks, my mom bought a 98 chevy, and I watched my dad try to work on it, and quickly realized how much easier it was to work on his 1980 CJ-5 Jeep, and anything else before computers. Then I saw pictures of my dad with his trucks he used to have, a 67 stepside, a 70 fleetside, and several 73-87s. After that, I began to notice how great they look, how good they sound, how easy they are to work on, the quality of the GM workers, and I fell in love!
