Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

Are you going to be running a bumper? I only ask because you might want to add some more bracing if you aren't. The frame from the factory is known to flex more then the suspension bolted to it.

Also, might want to add a brace from the frame to the fill tube. Somewhere around the shock mount. So it doesn't vibrate and crack something. Just a thought.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

yup running a bumper and those pictures are just the test fits im not done with it. the crossmember i had before is way weaker then the one i had. i will be running a bumper and a hitch that should keep the frame in place

as for the filler i might just have it running straight up to the wheel well and having a filler there because the way i have it routed at the point isnt the best.. but time will tell

Are you going to be using a body lift with that gas tank filler line? If not it will hit your box rails.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

ya maybe not sure i still havent been able to get an engine lift for i can set the bed back on the frame to see if that gas tank will hit and how i will route the gas filler. then i cut the box rails to accomadate the filler.

Looks real good! So you're going to run the filler neck up to the passenger side stock filler location? How big is that tank? Your truck is a LWB, right? It looks like it but in a couple of the pics I think my eyes are playing tricks on me. I want to do that swap and get rid of the saddle tanks the next time I have mine apart.

Marcus' post reminded me about this. Just saw this post, and thought it might be right up your alley if you wanted to ditch the mile long tube.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

altec- Thanks! do u mean that thank tank needs to be up more..or a suspension lift lol? and thanks for the link ill look into that. the bent bumper just bugs me! ill probably just end up getting a push bumper for it or build one out angle iron and sheet metal.

MtCk-Thanks! i believe the tank is a 33 gallon suburban tank. and yes it is longbed.. the pictures i posted makes the truck look smaller than it appears haha...

I got me an oil, temp, and ammeter gauges the other day! bought them for 30 bucks from oreilys hopefully they last long, emphasize on hopefully. also got a fuel strainer for the electric pump...10 bucks! saw one online for 3 bucks!. I also got some starter shims and there the wrong ones so i have to make a trip back to the auto parts store

The tank. It seems like the back of it is sitting lower then the front.

Make sure to get that ammeter wired properly.

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

Who makes the gauge you have? I can find a diagram for you depending on the kind of ammeter. There are two types. One that runs inline with your main + line from the battery, and the other type connects one side to the main + line on the battery, and the other end connects to the Alternator output.

Big difference! Makes it easier lol.

On the back of the volt gauge is two connectors. One should be marked "+" the other "-." Simply hook the "+" side to a spot on the fuse block that gets power while the key is on. The "-" is just a ground. Hook it where you like. I'd probably run it to the ground block that is up under the dash on the kick panel roughly right behind where the AC vent is located by the head light switch. At least, my '86 has one...

Can't wait for some new pics!

Re: 1987 chevy scottsdale 4x4 first project

haha tell me if the pictures are to big for i can resize them...i used photobucket this time way much better!

well installed my gauges...probably going to get a fuel pressure gauge but boy was that a pain in the rear to install. In the process of taking the old oil sender out i was trying to take the top part of and it was stuck so i used force and well it broke in half and broke into the hole...thank god for extractors and drills!

decided to refit my exhaust much better. Got a brand new battery with sidepost and top post. bought a brand new postive batt wire. also got my starter shimmed! almost ready to get this thing moving!

Looks good! Pictures are fine!

Hope you were careful getting the broken fitting out. That is the last place you want to send metal shavings done.
