Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I'm glad this thread got revitalized, it has sparked me up and I have set a lofty goal: This summer I plan on getting the engine/transmission in and running, and hopefully going down the road.
All this while moving, it might be a rough summer. I will make sure to take some pics when I get more involved. For now this is all I have. |

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
For those of you performing this swap, what have you done with the steering? Did you just install the motor high enough to clear the stock stuff, install a rack for more clearance or what? Ive got my motor in I modified the crossmember to set the motor down and back as far as possible, now its right in the way. If you are using a rack (which I would really like to do), what one are you using? Thanks.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Thanks Mark. I left the front all stock, rebuilt the motor mounts. The steering is all stock as well. Like Ryan said, I was also worried about geting the oil pan lower than the front cross member, too many bumps and things, this way it might hit the cross member not hte oil pan.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Im in the middle of a move right now, the pics will have to wait.
Im not worried about the oil pan being low, Ill shorten the sump or build a new one. Im trying to get that 1000+ lb chunk of iron as far down and back as possible.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
this really isnt that hard of a swap i didnt have to touch a front crossmember just clipped the right rail for a/c compressor. of corse had to make a new trans mount and crossmember, the only cutting i did was to take off the pinch weld in the trans tunnel. it worked real nice that the motor is low enough that i didnt need a body lift and the oil pan sump is flush with the bottom of the crossmember. good luck with this build

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
From a performance and handling stand point it's best to get the motor down and back as far as possible no matter what motor is being used. The Cummins motor is most likely the heaviest motor ever put into this 45 year old truck that never handled well to begin with. That is my motivation for where I'm trying to place the motor. I realize it can be accomplished differently.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Nothing. It's all heavy duty for a BBC. I haven't even installed the power steering cylinder. It's a little tough at first crank but then it isn't so bad.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Delayed slightly due to buying a 100 year old house, re-habbing it, then moving. But, I still have made some progress. The front clip is off the C10, engine and tranny out, and test fitting has begun.
I will post some pictures when it looks like I have done something other than take things apart. |

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Yeah, slowly chipping away at it. Currently clearancing the firewall to fit the engine as far back as possible. Once done with that then tranmission tunnel so I can get the trans bolted up. Then mounts and crossmember.
I bought a house last year as a resto project and it sucked all my time up. However, I am damn near done with it and ready to get this thing farther. |
