Re: Cross Country Trip....
Wow, I love this thread!
Summer 2000 I drove my 1965 from Amarillo, Tx to the San Francisco Bay Area(Fairfield, Vacaville, Suisun), I think it was 1700 miles or so. I had my girlfriend give me a ride to Texas, and she followed me back in her Toyota. I had 20 gallons of extra gas in cans just in case, water, oil, everything, and a old 1971 Suzuki TS185 that was my dad's. We went to a rest stop somewhere on I-40 around Flagstaff and there was a sign at the bathroom someone made, guy selling stuff (tools etc.) for gas money. The guy had lost his wallet and was out of gas in a old motorhome, and had a black dog like yours, it was hot and the dog was panting, I was gonna see what he had for sale, but then I felt bad for him and the dog being stranded. I gave him 10 gallons of my gas and he was very thankful, the next day we passed him on I-40 going west, he waved and honked and had a big smile. He was going to Idaho. Of course it could have been a scam, but I believed he was truly stranded, and it felt good to help someone in need. I hope you and your dog are ok, now that I have my truck back on the road, maybe we can have a 60-66 truck meet somewhere! |

[QUOTE=jonathan-m;4700621]Day 3
It's not the idea of a bridge, we just need to go a lot higher than the water That bridge is on I-10 going through Lake Charles and is about 1-2 miles as the crow flys from the Gulf of Mexico. Did you think the New Orleans High Rise was fun? I believe it is the highest bridge in LA.

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Very cool post. Glad your trip is going on with no major issues. Me and the family have done the cross country trip twice from Va. to California and back. After many miles of nothing but rocks and desert, I was never so happy to see some trees and greenery once we hit Oklahoma. I hope Fred can handle that dry Arizona heat, I stopped for gas at the Cali, Arizona border and the outside temp guage in my van read 122 degrees. I'll be watching and hope the rest of your trip is a trouble free one.

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Cool Post... Great Dog!
Ive done a couple of Minnesota to Pheonix, AZ or Pheonix AZ to Minnesota Runs in an old Chevy Truck. The first was in a bare-bones '71 C10. Had to replace a fuel pump in Kansas City in a Pep Boys parking lot, but other than that, drama free The craziest (stupidest?) was about 15 years ago when I decided I needed to find a nice rust free truck. I bought a one-way plane ticket to Pheonix, packed a duffle bag with just a handful of clothes (no tools btw) and took off. Got to Phoenix, rented a car at the airport and stopped at the first Circle K I could to buy a bunch of Truck-Trader and Local Newspapers.....This was all obviously PRE-INTERNET and GPS. Made a few calls to some promising looking trucks and by evening the following day had bought a '73 Chev for $1500.00. Kicked the tires, made sure it had fluid and proceeded to drive it 1900 miles STRAIGHT THROUGH to Minnesota.... The only "hitch" was getting caught in a hail storm in Des Moines Iowa at about 4 in the morning. This turned into a blessing in disguise as I got a nice paintjob out of the deal courtesy of State Farm. I drove that truck for 2 years and sold it to a friends younger brother. Last I heard, it was still going strong although the idiot started using it in the winter and now the body is totally shot. keep us posted on the rest of your trip! |

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Great thread!! I hope you doing OK and the good luck continues to hold!!
I have made a few cross country trips before in "doubtful" cars and truck and have always gotten home somehow WITH the vehicle. Made a few repairs in the parking lots too. Good Times were had by all!

Re: Cross Country Trip....
I am too. I was checking in nightly, about the time he posts, then one night there wasn't an update and hasn't been since.
I do hope Jon is ok. He's about the same age as my youngest son and I cannot seem to let go of my concern for him.
