Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

Only days I don't like my 4 speed T10 is when my back is out. However, my wife doesn't drive standard. That outweighs the negative I'll stay home when my back is out and my truck will stay out of my wife's hands.

Wait a minute.... if she can drive it, would the check book be any easier to pry from her hands??????

Smile Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

I am an old guy and I really enjoy driving one of these old trucks mostly stock with a 4 speed granny transmission. I have only owned and driven 3 of these trucks and all of them have had the 4 speed granny transmissions. One was a '72 GMC with a 350, the next was a '71 C-10 with a 350 originally then a 454 and the one we are building now is a '67 swb stepper that started out with a L6 250, but we are now putting a 454 in it.

If I get the urge to drive a truck with an auto I drive our '92 K-3500 GMC duallie, but I normally only drive it when I need to pull or haul something heavy.

My son and his family like the autos.

The way I look at it, build and drive your truck the way that brings a smile to your face.

One more thing...
try plowing snow with a manual transmission.
Well,we all have our opinions. To each their own. But,you have to watch being too assumptive. I don't have to go to the land of 10,000 lakes to find a boat ramp. Maryland has the Chesapeake Bay,Atlantic Ocean,Assawoman Sound,Potomac,Patuxent,Patapsco,Youhiogheny,Miles,Chester,Severn,Magothy,Susquehana, and other Rivers,Deep Creek Lake,as well as numerous lakes and rivers in PA,DE,VA,and WVA a short drive away. We have boat ramps and I've unloaded plenty of boats and, personally, have never had any trouble using a clutch.

We also have rush hour traffic backups. Again,no problem here. I guess my legs are in shape because working a clutch never phases my leg and I don't consider it stiff.

I use my trucks for work. Is that what you meant by "how the general intended"? Do these trucks look like girly show trucks? Notice the plow mounts. Their not for show, either:

Tim, "Assawoman Sound ?" .....did you just make that up ? I've got to Google this one Nice rides btw .....look like real work trucks, like mine did about 6 years ago. It was a hell of a lot easier not having to worry about scratches, waxing, rain, snow and the occasional get your greasy hands off my ride !

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

I like either, had a couple muscle cars with sticks and those were fun to drive. But honestly this 383 backed up by a th350 B&m shift kit and floor shifter (in ratchet mode) is the most fun I have had, and its my dd. Its all about what you like and what brings a smile to your face while driving! ...My motto is "do what you feel & feel what you do"

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

I drive my 66 Econoline everyday to and from Seattle in stop and go traffic. It has a manual 3 spd column shift and it doesn't bother me a bit.

I have had 60-60lb bags of concrete, 30-10' pressure treated 4x4s, 70-8' pressure treated 2x4s, compresser, nailer, hoses, saw and cords, plus a wheel borrow in the van and towing a trailer with enough 6' ceder slats to build the fence. I never had a problem with the clutch. Van drove normal and that was up and down hills! It also has manual stearing and manual drum brakes!

this is the van

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

My 68 is a 4L60E and its nice to not have to worry about it. I'm planning on getting a higher stall converter for drag racing.

My 69 is a 4 speed and for normal driving it doesn't bother me. One thing about these trucks is to get the shifter in a position that is comfortable to drive, its a pretty long throw.

Now, I had a 6 speed manual in my corvette and it was hella fun and really wish my G8 was too (not an option). The car would be SO much more fun with a manual.

I'm keeping the SM420 in my '67. I love that cast iron beast.

Yup! Ain't it a hoot? Did you google it yet? We are very proud here in Maryland of our Assawoman Sound. It's an old Indian name. You know how they derive names from symbolism? Must have been a very quiet, almost silent place way back when. Cuz you know a woman don't like nobody hearin' them fart
You must have heard of Manassas,Virginia too. No comment.

Really good point here.

The stick vs. auto debate can definitely go on forever no matter what car/truck. Most stick guys will always "stick" to there guns no matter what.

For a daily driver it's pretty hard to beat an automatic especially if you've got an 700r4 with overdrive already with no issues. It would be really hard for me to justify pulling that tranny unless it was all busted up. And if it was time to yank it I would be thinking pretty hard about throwing a 4L80e with the ability to electronically adjust the behavior and street manners. But then again I'm a lazy a$$ so don't listen to me

Some guys wouldn't be happy with anything less than a stick so it's definitely all down to personal preference.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

i have found that I tend to be too abusive when I drive a stick shift vehicle. Last stick shift I had I was ripping clutches every 6 months, and fraggin trannys every 12 months. It got old. (broke the clutch pedal assembly once)
With lower back problems, it sucks having to lift your foot all the time... esp if you have to wear heavy boots for work.
I'll stick with the slushboxes for now. I might get another manual one day.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

I drive Big truck everyday I work . 9 speed and deep reduction in a 93 Pete ..But was an 18 speed in a KW lowboy truck .

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

Its personal preference. I miss my 5-speed though. Drove it 80 miles a day about 1/2 in fairly heaving downtown rush hour traffic. It sucked when I spent that time jumping between 2 & 3, but it was always great to have that tranny slowing you down beffore your foot can get to the brake when some jack off up front slams his brakes... That car had a hydraulic clutch which was nice; I don't think I'd want to drive my C-10 with the old mechanical clutch like that.

Re: Do you guys get tired of shifting gears?

to answer the original quesiton, my answer would be "no, until I get stuck in traffic..."
Out here in cali desert, I love my T5. However, had I been pushing the pedal in and out a hundred times per mile in Washington DC traffic like I was a year ago, I'd probably have harry carried myself. But, bottom line, I love to row my own - feels more like I'm driving than being a passenger in the driver's seat. My 2 cents only - I do like automatics too, by the way. But for my hot rod (i.e. truck), prefer the manual trans.

My Burb has a very similar gear whine with the SM465, and Rockwell T221 combo and I love it! It's like music to my ears.
