Re: 49 GMC Pickup
The rear I put in is (I was told) from a late '70's Camaro. It measures 61'5" from mounting surface to mounting surface. That compares to 62 1/4" on my stock '54 3/4 ton GMC. I'm trying to avoid shims altogether if possible.
Regarding gas prices; since there is SO much more CO2 in our atmosphere, one would expect anything that contains CO2 to get lower in price, right? |

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
This is my 1937 Chevy Coupe. Not much there. It's in pretty much the same condition it was when I got it 30 years ago. I have both doors and the original frame with no suspension and no front clip. Maybe one day I'll get around to it. Possibly one of my next projects!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
This is my 1966 SB Custom Cab, Fleetside w/BBW. I built this truck back in 1993 and drove the crap out of it. It was in this primer and I never did any body work, but it started showing. I pulled the engine and trans for another project and decided to park the truck with intention to get back on it one day. Well life got in the way and after 12 years of living many many miles from home I'm back with my babies!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Tonight I travelled down to Boiling Springs, SC to get the last pieces of sheet metal I need for my build. I picked up a pretty nice set of original running boards. I'm super excited and now hopefully this weekend will be very productive and lots of metal and sparks will fly! Pictures and updates ASAP.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
nice whips man, hope you get those back on the road too. Crazy to hear how long you had them. I'm just turning 30 soon and you've had them that long. Awesome, I hope to have all my rides for my family when I'm six feet to hell!! Hope you make some progress this weekend.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
These are the running boards I got last night. They are a little rough and will need some work, but all in all very good for 60+ year old parts!
[IMG][/IMG] I got my mounts all welded up. I may run a few more passes on a couple of spots and do some grinding, then call them done! [IMG][/IMG] I put a couple of gussets underneath to add some extra strength to them. I will add more when I get them welded to the frame. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Finished filling in the frame. Still need to do some finish welding, grinding and then add some boxing and plates to bridge the welded pieces. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Picked up some scrap sheet metal for patch work yesterday. Our body shop had this bed side in their scrap pile. I had to cut it in half to get it home in my Magnum though. LOL It was either that or wait until i go back in Monday and drive my truck. Best part is it was FREE! [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
I got a little bit done this weekend. Not much that is noteworthy or even picture worthy! I did get the cab set back in place and have it pretty much where I want it. I loosely bolted up the front clip to see what it looks like and how the wheel centers up in the wheel opening. I have to say I like it. Definately need to put on some drop spindles toward the end of this. This thing is going to be sitting way down in the weeds! I'm really liking it!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
I got a set of 2" drops and put them on my 54 Belair before I sold it. What a difference that made. It too had an s10 frame swap.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
I always do the frame lowering before I mount the body on, so I can get the ride height exactly where I want it. On this you might want to mock up the front bumper too, they can end up pretty low in the front with the bumper on.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
yeah I agree with that on a static drop and when laying frame. but there is sooo much of these out there, if you use s10 frame, drop 2/3 and say a 26" tall tire, with a 3.5-4" off frame body, you're gonna be at a great stance. its what most everyone does. As billy said he just got it on there for moch up. how can we resist tossing the cab on and brainstorming for 20 min staring at it.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Thanks Henry, You said what I was thinking!
05snopro440... I don't disagree with you man! As Henry said it was hard to resist seeing where it sits. Plus I took measurements of where the cab mounts should sit on the frame a week or 2 ago and posted them to help someone else out and I wanted to see how accurate they are. Low and behold they are dead on! When you are doing all of this fabrication from stuff that was never designed to go together it takes a lot of trial and error and fitment to get everything just right. I know there is alot of information from the guys that have done a whole lot of these, and I havent even begun to read a percentage of it. Everyone has their own methods and vision and thats what makes this process great. We can work off of each other and do it in a mature way. When we do that everybody wins. You, me and anyone else who learns something from our mistakes and successes. I hope that I can be helpful to someone with the detail i'm trying to document on my build as many other guys are doing on here. I have certainly learned a lot by reading others posts. With that said... I'm figuring 2" with engine/trans and 2" drop spindles is gonna get this thing right where I want it, without it being too low to drive. I don't plan to run bumpers on this truck so that isn't an issue.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Yeah, that was one of the things I liked about the car. I have always admired that body style and decided I wanted one. Well life gets in the way and it had to go.
The clip and LS will definately make yours more reliable. Does it still have the enclosed drive system? I imagine doing an s10 swap on one of those isnt much different that doing it on the trucks we are doing. I would think the clip would work better though. Less sheet metal work required! I'll get another one day. Ive already been keeping a look out for a decent body. Again like our trucks, they are getting more and more difficult to find.
