Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Sweet pickup! Those big wheels and tires make it look like a real truck!
Man, what I wouldn't give to have a original style rubber floor mat like that!!

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Congratulations on the new addition! I am glad this truck went to someone who appreciates originality and to someone who will preserve history. The Custom Camper option is a great package of extra value options, and without saying, the '66's are the most refined of the bunch. I am sure it will turn heads everywhere it goes, the public craves authenticity on these style trucks, the type of authenticity usually found on only early corvettes or T Birds.

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Love your posts Bruce...can't wait to see the full fleet picture. I am amazed at how you find such cherry original-ish trucks...all I can find are Rust Buckets that have been jerry-rigged with aftermarket CRAP that the idiot owners want an arm and a leg for. jon

Hello Bruce, i was looking at this old post . Did that have 3 seatbelts in it . When you got it? My red one did not but my green one did? What about your other 66?

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Bruce.
All I can say is those trucks are totally awesome. Quality original survivors just make me weak in the knees! Is the seat cover all original in that red truck or restored? It is sweet. Mark

First super great truck. Can I say I'm envious. Looks like the name should read Marie's Big Red.

OEM...I noticed all your pretty ones have white paint circling the grill...Was that a stock two-tone style back in the day? I can't remember seeing that done on any of the other trucks I have seen. jon |

The white grill surround was a Chevy thing. They all had it. Single color OR two-tone. GMC's did not. It's commonly missed on repaints, along with blackout behind the grill and in the hood holes. |

Yes. Even without the white top or side trim, it would have been white around the grill. |

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
15 years ago no one around these parts wanted these 60-66 pickups and so they could be had for reasonable prices. But I believe that the stock of old beater 67-72 shortbeds has been whittled down so now demand has picked up for our pickups. Good if you're trying to sell, bad if you're trying to buy.

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
I can't seem to post a video clip, so here's a little sequence from when I first rolled in the drive with a vintage camper atop. My 8 yr old was leaping with excitement. For a dad who's into trucks, that's hard to beat.

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
It's been nearly two whole years since the last post on this thread, and the truck has gone through a few changes. No permanent mods, we just switched up the particular camper a couple times.
First, we pulled the big slide-in off for resto work and mounted a nice little GemTop shell that I acquired from another member here. After a little clean-up, I made a movable shelf/kid-sized upper bunk, fabbed up some window shade brackets, and fitted some privacy curtains made from vintage looking western themed fabric. Our little family of three would have no trouble doing some overnighting in this set up. Warm weather short term camping, that is. The small side window version of the GemTop line looks perfect with the plain sides of the truck. Sometimes less really is more, and to me, this is one of those times. |

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Another subtle change is wheels. Went from early "two bump" 19.5's to later and truly correct "one-bump' 19.5's. Besides dealing with some slow leaks on the early ones (turned out to be valve stems), since buying the truck I had learned the second (cone shaped) version of the big wheels was right for '66.
Not an easy wheel to find, but I managed six! |

Re: Meet Big Red - 1966 Custom Camper
Wheels and tires look great… worth all the effort to find. 19.5s has to help with top end if your rear is still 4:56. Congrats...
