Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Thanks AD! Got the 18" tips off and went with 22" that are more level with the truck. Finally got it where it needs to be.

Love the look of big ol chrome tips. Had nearly this exact setup on a k5 and always liked the way it sounded.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
This week I got a brand new but dusty never installed q-jet base plate. All mine are wore out around the throttle shafts. I've got a super nice one I'm gonna put this on and should make a good carb.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Been cruising my pickup the last few weekends. 3,000 miles in 5 months. Took it to a car show last weekend with my brother and his 84. Here's a pic a lady took at the show. Also been working my way through a list of small projects on it, trying to make it as nice of a weekend driver as possible.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Here was the first project. Replacing the worn out tranny mount. It fixed my driveline vibration/roar so that was a success. Also got both door jamb switches polished up and working properly and replaced the courtesy light bulb (took longer than I thought bc the first NEW bulb was bad right out of the box). I replaced the ac control switch also, it shorted out internally and smelled like burning plastic. My brother placed an order with classic parts and got me a new cargo light lens with his order, so I finally got that yellowed one off of it. I guess that's about all for now. Still thinking about what tire sizes I want to run and I've about decided to get 285/70 for the rear again. Can't get radial t/a anymore so I'd have to get BFG silvertowns which is a bummer bc I sure do like the meats in the rear!

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Been putting some miles on the 86 and it's been fun cruising it in this unusual warm weather we've been having. The power steering pump took a dump so I put a new one on and painted everything while it was all apart. I noticed the battery tray was rattling so I cleaned it up and painted it as well while I repaired it.
Then yesterday I was moving stuff around in the shop and found a brand new overflow bottle I bought for my old 87 I sold but never installed. Score! |

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Been a while with no updates. I FINALLY got around to building the new quadrajet a month or so back with all new goodies and so far it seems great. I've got a set of rally's prepped and almost ready to install with new caps. Still have to find a source to get trim rings from and order new tires for the front. 275/60/15 BFG radial t/a will be here in the next few days for the back. I'm also going to order a roll of side trim from classic parts to replace what is on the truck now. Trying to spruce the ol girl up for a squarebody show coming up in a few weeks.

Do you know Bob in Marietta? He used to work for Oldsmobile. He's a good buddy of mine. Love your truck. I want to get another one someday.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Yeah I know Bob! He's one of my best friends and been working with him a lot here lately since I got laid off a few months back. He's been a big influence to me and taught me a good bit of what I know about these old GMs. I bought one of his old cars back in 03 and still have it (actually storing it at his place now) a 1970 Rallye 350

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Here's him with his latest project. It's a 1953 Willys jeep that we've been redoing for him a runabout for some land he recently bought. Fun little project, it has came a LONG way from a few months ago when he brought it home.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
The wheels came out very nice. I like the little Willy's and almost bought one a few years ago for the same purpose. Kind of a nice change from all the side by sides running around.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Thanks guys. I got the rears all finished up, except that I'm going to bolt on some 1" spacers when they arrive. 275/60/15 radial ta. I ordered 255/60/15 for the front and should be mounted tomorrow. Went to a swap meet at Texas motor speedway this past weekend and found the trim rings I wanted and picked up a fresh set of chrome lug nuts. Getting ready for a squarebody show in two weeks.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Had a local trim shop cut me some vinyl grill strip inserts. $20 minimum on orders from them so I got 5. Should have enough to last a lifetime now since it'll only take one strip

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Grill is done. Meh, it's better than it was and will be alright temporarily but it'll get painted one of these days to be right. The gloss of the vinyl wasn't as glossy as I thought.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
All back together. I went ahead and buffed the trim while the grill was off.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
O5duramaxhd, are you bringing the blue k10 again? My brother told me about them opening up the years to more than just squares.
Here's how the 86 sits now that I've dialed it in. |

255/60 up front on 7" rally's, 275/60 rear on 8" rally's with 1" wheel spacers in the rear.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
For our crappy roads here in southern Oklahoma this is the perfect height for a driver in my opinion. I put the factory overload back in it and whacked the bumpstops off while it was in the air. I'm really pleased with how the staggered tire sizes came out with the spacers.

Re: 1986 black swb build thread
Thanks 91short I appreciate it. Skeet, As for the suspension it has 2.5" drop spindles and new replacement factory length coil springs. In the back it's shackles on the lowest setting and hangers with the factory light duty 4 spring leaf pack. All leafs are in place now. So from everything I've read it is 2.5/4 drop on tires that are about an inch shorter than stock.
