Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Made it to Calgary yesterday with no problems! Will be heading out again soon, but here's a picture from last night - we did a bunch of longboarding last night along the river and downtown with a couple buddies. Great fun!

Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Well we are almost to Cranbrook and have had no problems! It was rainy this morning but as soon as we got into the mountains it cleared up. The chevy keeps up with traffic fine, though we havent seen any major climbs yet. Handles fine in the curves too. Getting lots of thumbs ups! Haven't seen any other old pickups out so far...did see a very nice '69 Camaro in Firney though.
Here is Frank Slide, where in the early 1900's an enormous slab of rock broke off the mountainside and buried most of the town in rubble. Here is the worlds largest truck in Sparwood, the only one built. Used for mining coal. The turbo blew in 1990 so they retired it...a replacement would have been a one-of-a-kind part. And here is a shot just outside of Firney.

Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Thanx for jogging the old brain!!
I worked for Kaiser Coal back when that big truck first arrived. They assembled parts of it down along the highway close to where it sits now. Hauled the box up the hill on a seperate trailer. They drove the cab and chassis up the main road. It broke down 6 times. Mostly hydraulic lines. The four most senior 'Deuce' drivers (200 ton haul trucks) got to run the big guy. It spent a lot of it's first year getting fixed. Hauled a lot of rock though!! I ran a 100 ton for a couple years. You haven't lived until you've driven uphill at 2 mph for 3 miles with a 140 tons of coal on board or downhill when the brake retarder failed and your rear brakes went up in smoke and you trailed a big ball of fire until you went up the runaway lane. Enjoy your trip!! |

Cool pics! I have done the same trip as you a few times and it never gets old, just beautiful scenery. I think the mine truck needs an ls swap..everything else seems to be getting one!

Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Just realized you were coming through. Big show in Sandpoint, ID this weekend, with the main show on Saturday. Then a car show in Creston on Sunday.
Would have been great if you could have added this to your schedule. Enjoy the drive, and keep sending pics! |

Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Wow....looks like a great trip so far! That Nelson/Kootenay area is really cool high mountain forest country.....watch for Grizzlies!...lol.
There are some great steep hills heading west out of the Nelson area that are entertaining in the heat of summer...no worries on this trip tho' this time of year. Glad to hear the truck is running well....but not surprised! Keep on truckin' dudes. Coley

Re: Epic Vancouver road trip!!
Drove from Creston to Summerland today. Beautiful, beautiful country. Had a couple long climbs where the temp started to creep up...but never problematic.
Had to tighten a very loose fan belt before we took off in the morning. On the road again Wrapped up the day by jumping into the Okanagan lake. Its chilly in May
