Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
Get a felpro head gasket if it needs one. They're the best out there. If you can do a compression test that will tell you if you have a blown head gasket or at least give you a clue as to which cylinder may have issues. Issue is alot of times the head gaskets would blow from over reving the engine. You'll want to pull the pushrods out and make sure they're straight. The lifters will pull out from the top to, be a good time to check for wear and tear on those. Congrats on the fire up though.

Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
All is going well with the truck. That 292 tuns amazingly smooth. Its blowing a lot of black smoke when I rev it. Also, the top gasket on the Rochester is leaking. What donyou guys think, the float set to high causing it to leak and run rich?

The leak on the Rochester is a usual one. Normally is just warped bowls being that they are pot metal.

Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
Oh well that's a relief. So then the running rich....the air fuel mixture screwis only half a turn out from seated. Idle is 700rpm. Tap the gas and it blows black smoke. Any thoughts? There's no hesitation either. When the a/f screw is around 1.5-2 turns out it starts much easier but blows black smoke at idle. Where should about this screw be set?

Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
If you look down the carb at idle do you see gas trickling out? If so the float needle is probably not seating right. The air fuel mixture screw are usually out about 2 1/2 turns. If you screw them all the way in it should stumble. If it idles nice then you have carb issue. I think I have a carb laying around. I can bring it down with me at the end of the month if you want to come pick it up at the Brothers Truck Show.

Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
Fleetside-- it will die if I keep turning the screw in. I am running very old gas too. Was gonna drain and refill the tank this weekend. Can the black smoke be from gas that is very old?

Re: picking up a 64 tomorrow morning!
I would have to say no. There is old gas in my brothers car and it just stinks but no black smoke.
