Re: Hot Rod Power Tour 2016

Day 6 is in the books and may be the hottest yet for the 2016 HRPT. 97 degrees with a 108 heat index. Wow! I think it should be a bit cooler in KC tomorrow, but not sure it will be a noticeable difference. The local news media reported that an estimated 6000 vehicles attended today. That seems a bit high, but there's no doubt there were a lot of cars and trucks parading about. Here's a sample of what was out there but I wore out long before I got to see it all.

Chip (LowElco) and his sons made the trip in Yeller and the S10. (Is that Pi$$ Yellow?) Awning up and swilling down slushys to keep cool.

BTW, we had the best fairground chow of the entire trip today at Charlie's PizzaTaco food truck.

Very nice pics! Stay cool and have a blast! Are you going to go to the road kill drags on after the tour?

We have tickets to participate in the "Dodge Only Show and Shine" and plan to attend at least for awhile. Chip (LowElco) was saying today they're still recruiting for the drag race part of the program. Should be interesting.

Re: Hot Rod Power Tour 2016

2016 HotRod Power Tour is in the books. We made a side trip to the house yesterday to unload the car and start a load of laundry, so we were late getting back out to the speedway. There were quite a few cars still there, but the crowd was thinning out pretty fast. Several of the sponsors were loading up and leaving in the 18 wheelers while the program was still in progress on the main stage. I don't blame them a bit... it was another scorcher out there with no good place to hide from the sun. We ended up finding some shade along the backside of a tractor trailer and there was just enough breeze to keep it tolerable. We talked to several people that said they hoped the tour would start in KC and go north next year. Might be cooler that way.

We learned a lot about how people approach the tour. There are several mindsets.
1) There are the folks that follow the HRPT routes thru the small towns. They typically endure more stop and go traffic but see a lot more cars on the road. Many choose to drop by the scheduled stops or find interesting spots of their own. They get to the venues later in the afternoon and hang around for the raffles and the hijinks on the main stage. I think this group best adheres to the spirit of the tour.
2) Then there are people like us that mostly stick to the main highways with an occasional side trip. You don't encounter as many Power Tour cars, but the delays are limited to road construction. You get to the venue early enough to enjoy the show with only moderate lines at the vendor booths and before it gets so miserably hot. We usually bailed when we got tired and checked into the motel to cool off.
3) The last group I would characterize as the efficiency experts. They get to each venue early to avoid the crowds. By early afternoon, they're already on the road to the next destination. That way they can sleep in and still be onsite as others arrive. They have the shortest lines to deal with, but may miss some of the action in the afternoon when the locals and the long haulers start to roll in.

I only have one last picture to post. Not sure where this guy is from, but he could be from down where all the flooding has been and just didn't want to take any chances. Hope he doesn't need that canoe for anything other than a float trip.

X2, really appreciated all of the posts and C10 pics!

Also liked how you categorized the 3 different approaches to the PT.

One more though the ones who run the full route stopping along the way to see stuff getting to the venue to pick up the stamps and then going to the motels to shower and sit and talk about the days adventures.

I'm still down loading all my pictures.

I didn't take many pics at all. It was so hot and I didn't have my navigator with me this year, but the old girl managed to complete the long haul and make it home.

Re: Hot Rod Power Tour 2016

I met Rut at a gas station. He actually talked to me for at least 5 min. Really cool guy. He said he liked my car! Then I met them all at the TMS, very cool. The Camaro's are the cars Rut's group drove for the entire tour. I also met/talked with the Roadkill guys, but didn't get a pic with them.

We took a ferry in LA on 22 (we didn't run the route that day).

Re: Hot Rod Power Tour 2016

This was 2015 with my wife/navigator. She took one look at the route for 2016 and said "no way in hell". I'm actually happy she didn't come this year, I would have had to put her on a plane home by Saturday night. She is very heat intolerant. She gets sick and gets headaches and crap if it's too hot out. I'll ***** about it, but the heat doesn't bother me.

Talking Re: Hot Rod Power Tour 2016

Here is the HRPT face book pictures 600 pictures I am not re loading here.
We all got to meet Rutledge at the station.
He was cool, he talked to everyone who came up to him. I also talked to him again later that day at the show.
One of our gang blew the distributor in his 383 Vega station wagon. I took him to the advance store. We epoxied it duc taped it and tie wrapped it. he is still driving it like that. from Oklahoma City back to Winston Salem NC. He followed me back drove straight through. a little over 1200 miles in 26hrs,
I think I got a few of these on the way and I know I gave a few to some stupid as drivers!

Was that on the last day? There was 3 broke down rods, one was pushed out of the way, and the other two had trailers we had to go around. That was the worst slowdown of the week.
