Re: Why do people ignore square bodies?
I can understand rust complaints, but as for plastic parts, they still have far fewer than the GMT400 trucks, everyone speaks so highly of. Any truck is going to be a rusted, mangled POS, if you abuse it enough.

yep 3/4 and 1 tons had none of the smog equipment (except pump hosed to to manifolds) and when your outside a smog zone, you retro your squarebody pre '75. that's what I did.

Re: Why do people ignore square bodies?
If you remember, a lot of these trucks was bought up by the government and then they were scraped. It was a really hard thing to see some really nice square bodies go to the crusher and watch them pour stuff into the engines to destroy them. People got good money for them. I am just glad the government did not make it a law to do away with these older cars and trucks. I believe that would be "war"! We love our trucks. But as I said " this is why so many are not on the road anymore". I believe this was back in the 90's. Just not sure of the year.

the squares fall into a weird category with me... it so strange seeing them at car shows now as ive never really seen them as show trucks. growing up they were just cheap reliable fun transportation that you could even take the roof off of. mine is in decent shape except for small holes in the cab corner and the wife always wants me to put it in local car shows (i think she loves it more then i do). to me its just a driver or a hauler when i need it. ill never sell it if i can help it |

This generation of trucks is probably overlooked because they were made for 20+ years with very minor stylistic changes. Finding nice examples cheap has become difficult in the last 5-10 years. I've experience the same thing as the other guys here, I was even stalked in the parking lot at Walmart the other day by a guy who said his dad had a truck just like mine when he was a kid and he wanted to buy it. Literally a month after I got my truck someone stopped me in a gas station and wanted to buy it. Everything is cyclical and and squarebody trucks seem to be pretty hot right now. |

This, and the fact that the "California cash for clunkers" programs have stripped the state of older vehicles. Unfortunately the state (B.A.R.) mandates the vehicles acquired through these programs be crushed. In the 70's and early 80's the square body truck was the top seller In the SF bay area. Now there are hardly any squares left.

Re: Why do people ignore square bodies?
Not sure if they are ignored but I think due to the numbers built and 'just a work truck' idea people pass on them. But even when my truck was in a bad state of repair people would give me a thumbs up. I just remember one time in California the lady next to me at the stop light yelled to me 'is it supposed to be so loud?' I nodded yes and smiled as I drove off. I agree as the desire for them increases so will the prices.
