Re: 1967 step side build!
Got a little work time in yesterday. Got the rear end final install. Gonna try and start on the front after church today.
As I said in another thread found some serious rust. Looking for a better cab. Cut the roof off and found a ton of epoxy filler. A lot of rust under the lower cowl panel. If I can't find a good cab I'll fix it but that's the long road for sure. |

She's a rolling chassis again! I still gotta plumb the brakes and tighten steering components. Another week or so and it's body work time.

Re: 1967 step side build!
I got the control arm shafts tightened tonight. My hat is off to you guys who do that from under the truck. I was able to tighten them from the top and it was still a pain in the butt. I used a box end wrench and a 3' cheater pipe on all of them. Started tightening the steering components and broke a grease fitting in the idler arm. There's $25 I'll never see again. I'm still looking for a donor cab. Supposed to look at another one next week. Maybe it'll be better than mine. I've looked at 3 of them so far and can't find one worth the time and money yet but I know there's one out there. Lol

Re: 1967 step side build!
I guess I need to update this post. I’ve got a little sidetracked building a new garage but I have been making progress. I have the bed mocked up and started body work on it. Replaced the angle strips on sides, new rear cross sill, new front panel, and all the bed bolts. I ran across a good deal from Mar-K and ordered oak wood bed with hidden bolts and hidden bolt bed strips. Went ahead and ordered their SS tailgate hinges and locks so I can get rid of the chains. I believe I’m gonna paint the wood black. I also filled in the stake pockets and capped the rear bed rails. Started fitting and welding the gas filler door in for rear tank. I’m getting close to starting the repairs on the cab.

Re: 1967 step side build!
Great looking truck, Gearhead. Do you know what the backspacing is on your wheels? I have a similar build, and I am about to order wheels and tires, and I want to make sure I order ones that won't rub.
Thanks!

Re: 1967 step side build!
I have a 1991 mustang parts car that I robbed it from. The inner spill pan fits perfectly also and the filler tube is the same size as the Boyd tank I got. I do have to cut the filler tube and rotate it to line up with the tank neck but that’s no big deal. The only thing I’m not crazy about is that it opens the wrong way but I ca live with that.

Re: 1967 step side build!
I started fabn the tailgate tonight. It was pretty beat up so I gave it a little facelift. I’m gonna weld it up and body fill it to make sure it turns out good. If it doesn’t I’ll just buy one. I’ve got hidden hinges and latch kit from Mar-k to go on it also.

Re: 1967 step side build!
I dont have any pics tonight but I was able to weld the tailgate up and start grinding it back down. I do have a pic of our new shop dog. This is Maggie Sue. She is a Goldador. Mother is full blood yellow lab and father is full blood golden retriever. She’s spoiled already.

What a cutie!
Don't forget her lungs are as sensitive as ours, so kick her out for stinky stuff (wife's a veterinarian - I hear so many stories of dogs with lung problems from 2nd hand smoke, etc.) Great project as well! I put an 88-98 Silverado/Tahoe/Burb/S10 and all their twins door on my stepside like 12 years ago.

Re: 1967 step side build!
That custom tailgate is awesome! I usually don't like custom mods that mess with stock body lines or dimensions, but that looks right at home. Definitely gives some dimension to the flat stepside gates. Nice work.

Re: 1967 step side build!
Well it’s a shame you can’t buy used welding machines and use them for another 20 Years and have them weld good. Lol just kidding. My old Miller 130 mig had seen better days. I ordered a Miller 215 to replace it. We just got it in today and haven’t welded with it yet but I bet it’s way better. I have a whole cab repair job test it out on lol. It’s a multiprocessor that will TIG, MIG, and Stick all in one.

Been doing a lot of work on the old truck. Installed Mar-K hidden hinges and SS latches. I’m real happy how those turned out.
