If you post about the stuff you are doing with your El Camino or to ask questions about stuff like engines, brakes, body work, etc. I feel it will be welcome. It's a good hearted bunch around here. Most of the work on these cars, trucks, tractors, aircraft, bicycles, or whatever involve methods, skills, ideas, that we can all learn from or contribute to. Now if you go and trade that thing for a Ranchero or Brat and start posting about that, folks might get just a little more vocal...

Heck yeah they’re cool! Id love to have a Baja Brat I’m a huge fan of Subaru’s. My first car was an 02 Bugeye RS, still got it. Nothing gets better traction.

I got stuck on VWs from my dad. We had the first year bus way back when, a '53! He always wanted a double cab TRUCK. If they weren't so ungodly expensive I would buy one to honor him. I bought a '66 in '76 and made what I called a Baja Bus out of it. Took it to Baja, too! These were rated at 3/4t. It's the torsion bar suspension that makes that possible. I would load 80# bag mix in the center up to level with engine area, then lumber to the roof on sundeck jobs

Then there were truck based Utes. Makes no sense to argue over what shade of grey area these vehicles fall into when manufacturers went about making these things whatever way they wanted anywhere between truck based and car based. The fact is, they were offering an alternative TRUCK back before we had mini-trucks in this country. You go to any grocery store and there is a meat section and a seafood section. Some have a poultry section separated. It's all meat. There are hubcaps and there are wheel covers. Very distinctively descriptive names for each, hubcaps cap hubs and wheel covers cover wheels, yet both get called hubcaps. If you chop the back roof off and take seats out of a station wagon to haul cargo it is no longer a station wagon. It now fits the description of a truck... a vehicle with seating position for a driver, and passenger beside, with rear cargo area.

Are these truck based cars...with a bed?



Where is the focus on this truck with most of the load to be carried in the no-no area to make room for the whole famn damily? I see a car, but I call it a truck. An El Camino's focus is far greater toward cargo than this joke of a truck, like the bed was an afterthought

Flexibility is a sure sign of intelligence. Rigidity is just the opposite. Take a look around. I've changed my thinking on many things over the years once I took in all the facts I had gathered. We have agreed with all your points about what parts the El Caminos were built from. Good points, nothing I didn't already know in my consideration. Shows that these pickup trucks were built from a car platform. Shows they are both in their entirety. Shows they began as cars but ended up as trucks. I don't need to insult people who disagree with me. I am too intelligent for that. I also don't find this thread sad, or even your posts to be sad. I find it all to be good healthy conversation with a seasoning of debate sprinkled on. I never found this very topic, discussed many times over, to go in any direction but the one this one has taken. It's all good, but I'm done. I am intelligent enough to know when to walk away. Just too cocky to roll over or run from a good debate. This merry-go-round is making me dizzy anyway

Manufacturers will build what will sell,so who knows what they will be turning out tomorrow!
Look at the sudden popularity of electric cars! It's not new technology either.It's just renewed interest (with plenty of advertising of course!).
And,just for the record,I'd say that about 80% of light duty trucks on the road today are not actually used as trucks.
I've a nice,expensive K-3500,all optioned out,but it's never been in the mud but once!It's one of those look what I have deals!Men gotta be men!
But,they don't make Elky's anymore.
