Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well no progress as of right now still haven't ordered my clips either so guess I'm a bum this weekend. On the other hand the 71's running decent. Puffs a lol white smoke in startup and may make you pass out when waiting a long time in a drive-thru but hey she's golden

On a side note graffiti summer is comin up this beginning if June I wanna try and et a big group to come to the car shows such as members from the c/10 club and what not as I see them most. Guess ill need to look around the region section.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

So we've decided to not cut the LCA's and go with a different method. So here goes my father will be oblonging the original pressed hole so that he can fit a race car style threaded sleeve into it about 1/2" inwards giving me the amount I need to move the wheel in and straighten up the tire so there's no alignment issues. Hell then get the arm plated where needed and clean up the edge so that I won't have a rubbing issue. These arms are already gnarred up so its no real lose to do this to them.

Well be using Titan low friction ball joints as well as long as he can find a long enough about to fit through the lower spindle. I won't get many in progress updates but here's a couple idea shots of the work.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Also have decided that I will not be swapping my trans out for a different one.. I've come to the realization if something works really well why change it ya know? Going all out on motor though most definitely 350/330 hp 96-2000 motor with the dug thorley mid length pipes I was looking at to add a little shiny to the engine compartment. She'll guzzle some gas for a bit but I think I'll be plenty happy

Sounds like fun plans. Curious to see how the ball joints turn out.

As am I should be fun.

Sorry if I missed something, but what is causing your alignment issues in the first place?

I have a real bad issue with the driver side wheel leaning in at the top creating wear on the inside tread of the tire therefore causing a pull when driving and a nasty look when showing off the truck.

So by moving the lower joint in the bottom scoots in and I can use less than the max amount of shims on the top which is where its at now.

I used some offset control arm shafts to solve that issue on my chevelle, not sure if they make them for these trucks though. I know they make them for the 73+ model years (moog problem solver).

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Those would be great to use but this may be my best solution for now. And yes I noticed that my moog ball joints seemed to have cracked in only under 2 years around the rubber they have. Very disappointed in that

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Got in some goodies on Friday and I'm still working on my motor guy to sell me the darn thing, he's crackin finally but darnit gotta seal the deal soon or else I won't make Brothers this year :/

Anyway been working on my steering wheel as of late it just wasn't living up to my standards with the shotty cracking it was getting along with being gummy. So tear down begins I'll post the main stuff in my official thread tmrw for the in-depth stuff and keep the quick progress here.

Also going to be ordering up my mid length Doug Thorley headers and Trick Flow steel center to perimeter adapters from summit as soon as the deals made on the motor. Given that maybe we need a sneak peek at what I'm actually getting?? hmm maybe another time

Haha right but in all reality if I got it to my dads shop on a Friday night after work and we started pulling things apart from it. I.e. hood and misc small stuff.
it'll be a direct swap.

The new motor already has its own intake, dist, water pump, and flywheel that is I they correspond to what I have now..

So I pull my carb, starter, fuel pump and serpentine pulley system from old motor and slap it to the new one bada-bing bada-boom. Should be do-able in a days work I'd say

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

To prevent cracking, you are going to have to find a filler material with the same rate of expansion under varying temperatures as the steering wheel material. If the two materials do not expand and contract at the same rate, they will separate.

I think where I failed on the cracking portion was that I laid some area down on a bad surface and it had grease. So I washed it real good this time and cleaned it just the same to hopefull prevent that from doing it again. I also laid more down and will sand less away than last time so it's not all the way to the crack.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Little update, no work on the steering wheel last night. But I did manage to pick up a ball joint unfortunately it's just a little large for the bottom of my spindle so ill be hoping our guy can find some kind of threaded style that we can use. I may en up putting my arms back on for now.

Would my old ball joints be find to press back in??

Also removed my old power steering box last night. She has a little too much play for my likin and was "catching" a while back so out she goes to be replaced with another that ill be picking up Saturday.

Gotta pull the pitman arm what's my best method about this?

You can get a pitman arm puller. There only about $15 and can be used for several other uses.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Right I stopped by oreillys last night as its literally down my street and rented one for a couple days. Pulled mine off in about a minutes time. Much quicker than a hammer
I'm driving the 71 to work today then afterwards ill be pullin the box off her as well to get them both turned in for freshly rebuilt ones. 125$ a piece with 30$ rag joint so my front end should be pretty stout by Saturday night.

I'm also going to try and repress one old ballpoint back in for now and I found out my driver side one was pretty jacked after the wheel fell off a couple years ago so that ones gettin replaced with a new one. Then I'm slapping the arms back on for time being until I can find the correct style threaded balljoint to put in.

Steering wheel is in the pre primer stages as of now I should be havin my dad shoot the first two coats Saturday morning so she looks decent for Sunday's show.

That's all for now ill be thrashing till she's drivable Saturday night

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Do yourself a favor and get the box for a 73 and also do the caster mod. It takes about 15 minutes to drill the holes for the mod since you already have the arms off and the 73 box has a better steering ratio, your truck will handle like a sports car. Ask me how I know!
