No big changes just a bunch of little things.

Thanks Guys, I have asked this question before with no response. Good information to know on the GMC's. Chevrolet identification is no problem if it has the correct emblems.

The emergency brake cable under the truck is different on a 66

My brother hasn't started an account here yet, but he just bought this 1966 K20 last week. 350, 4 speed, guy that owned it drove it to Arizona and back twice hauling a boat. On one of those trips he had a Cool Pack AC system installed. Pretty solid truck, rides real nice.

The blue Custom Camper above.........the sticker on the engine says it is a 250, but that is actually a 292.

From here you start to post questions in the The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Message Board.
Eventually starting a build thread.

This looks like a pretty decent truck. Tell your brother to get on the ball and open an account here.

I do not know much on how to identify the L6 engines as I am a V8 engine guy. How can you tell that the engine is a 292? Is it because it is optioned as a Custom Camper?

This looks like it has not been running for sometime. Get the engine running. Check or replace all the drivetrain fluids. Go through the brakes, replace tires and possibly upgrade wheels and drive the heck out of it.

the fuel pump and passenger side mounting. the eng mount on passenger side 292 eng is forward from what a 230 - 250 eng is and the fuel pump is forward on a 230 - 250. the side inspection panels (lifter / pushrod access are 2" higher on a 292 than on the others

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild

The lt blue 66 K20 is really nice. Chatted with seller - I had asked for the SPID because I wanted to actually see a 66 K20 Custom Camper (didn't think Custom Camper was an option in a K20 until 67/68-ish). Anyway, he said he took it from the original owner's barn, however, amazingly the SPID was gone as was the build sheet (i.e. the only way to confirm it's a Custom Camper). Anyway, I'd say it's suspect - especially with the funky red hand-painted badges. The guy was helpful and responded quickly. So would I if I was asking almost $39K, but still... Still a beautiful truck, but have never seen a K20 Custom Camper before the next gen of trucks - has anyone else? Just curious. I should probably run through this whole thread again and see if there is one...

EDIT: fwiw, gm heritage center vehicle info kits don't list Custom Camper (Z81) as an available RPO in 65/66 for a K. 67's VIK has the weird hand-scribbled note about Z81, and 68 has the formal option listed for a K. I have seen 68 K20 Custom Campers but have never seen one for 65-67.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild

Here are the pics of the VIKs mentioned above (67 then 68) I do realize this is the 60-66 forum, but trying to nail down the possibility of a K20 Custom Camper in 66. I don't think it's possible - has anyone else got any pics of a verified one. Seller of the lt blue K20 custom camper above swears up and down it's original - but nobody knows these trucks like this forum. So, would like to confirm my understanding of when Z81 became an option on a K. From what I can tell, it's either 67 or 68.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild

As Ron stated above, the relationship of the distributor, engine mount and fuel pump on the right side as well as the height of the side covers. Also the thermostat bypass hose on the left side above the alternator.

Jocko. I was wondering the same thing about a '66 K20 Custom Camper. But then again, I do not know as much about the original options as some members here do.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild

292 engines have the 6 inch side covers, fuel pump in the middle, taller spacing between the water pump and head, and also a bypass water hose.
250 engines have 4 inch side covers, fuel pump right behind the distributor, very little spacing between the head and water pump.
230 engines are the exact same as a 250 except the 230 has flat top pistons and a shorter stroke. Only way to tell the difference between a 230 and 250 is looking at the pistons. 250 will have dish, and 230 will be flat top. The one pictured in the blue truck is a 292...one dead give away is the Green color. The 230 and 250's were blue.

Re: 60-66 Chevy And GMC 4X4's Gone Wild

jocko Could a 4WD truck not be ordered as a COPO Camper Special.
K25 had Heavy Duty suspension Options & Engine Options already, therefore, could it not be ordered through a Central Office Production Order.
Is there any piece of a Camper Special Optioned truck that could not be optioned on a K25?
My apologies but I don't know what was included in the Camper Special Option.
