it looks like you need to see if theres still gas in the welder , you might want to tune it a bit too , it isn't all caused by poor weldingskills

What I would recommend is to take the scrap pieces that you have and try to lay some beads. This way you can practice welding and also play with the settings on the welder without having to worry about messing up your truck. Also use only what you need from the patch panel. I was trying to use whole panels that came from the mfg and was creating a bunch of extra work. I started just using what I needed by cutting out the parts that I needed. Plus my theory was that the older metal is probably thicker than the patch so it was probably better to use it over the thinner pcs. Other than that it looks good and I think you are on your way. Thanks for the tips guys, I wanted to use just the bottom of the panel, but... well, the rust ran along a seam to the right and up under the paint, so when we started wire brushing and poking to find dmg it kept going and going, so thats why we opted to use the entire patch, I think it would have been easier and cleaner to just use what we needed, but well.... I'm still learning. come the cowl though its going to be a pain and I am a bit weary, but we will see!!

Bay the way I have seen mention of temp supports.... for doing the floor board and cowl, anyone mind taking a moment to shed some light on where these suppors should be and how much weight they should be able to hold?

When I did the floor and cowl pieces on dads 52 the kit that we bought from *****in came with some pieces of angle that you tack weld to the frame. They were about 3/16 thk and bent to the same angle as the cab mounts. You weld them to the cab mount and to the lower cowl area. When you are done doing what you need to do then you cut them off. Take a look at my build thread and I think I have a couple of pictures of them.

wish you would have said something sooner, I have those also and could have sent them with the other parts. I did mine off the frame and did not use the ones in my kit.

50 I forgot about that article. It has been a while since I did the floor. I actually ordered that article and have it in a book in the garage. It was a great reference...probably better than the instructions that came with the floor.

ok so with the help of the tutorial and some time we were able to eliminate all the rust on the driver side, Keep in mind the floor board was rusted through all over. the kick panel was rusted into 2 pieces by the rusted inner to outer cowl, the outer cowl was bent down the middle from a sprung door and the bottom was completely missing.... so lets start....

We cut it out.... (again)

I know I'm gonna hear it about #1 cutting out too much, and 2 not having the correct supports, I have answers for these... #1 the rust was this bad.... period. #2 we made a mock frame to support the cab naturally when we began installing. Might not be what some of you would do but keep in mind we are working out of a 2 car garage in the front yard of my middle class neighborhood, lol.

Ok so after cutting it all out we prefit the floor pan, Keep an eye on the gap on the left, we fixed this our own way..

We set the inner kick panel.... and notice the gap is gone, I'll tell you how we did this without the extra patch if anyone is interested...

Ok so after that... we started the outer cowl, btw guys, no one told me they used lead to fill the seams on these old things..... that would have been a pretty good heads up... I made J do all the work near the lead, that **** scares me. We made a pretty big mess of the cowl but... I am happy to report that we got this thing so close to perfect even before body filler it was amazing.... we also hung the door to double check everything before we set everything in stone for the outer cowl.

We found a monster....

Then poof it was done and my pants fell off.....

I'll get some pictures with the body filler in tomorrow so you guys can see how nice it really did turn out.

Hey man!! Before you go any futher I would check to see if the doors would go back on. You didnt brace the cab to make sure nothing moved!! Its almost a sure thing that with all the metal cut out that your gonna have fitment issues. If the doors dont fit right then the front clip is gonna be even harder to get straight. Just a heads up, check your measurements

He said he hung the door after the floor and cowl replacement before finishing the outside piece. Man, after seeing this I am so glad my truck was a good western desert rig. Neighbors must be loving you. I live in a neighborhood of gear heads so cars in the front yard don't faze us...

slim's right I'm still fighting door alignment issues now is the time while you can still cut and weld... don't forget to test fit the weather-stripping this one got me.. nice work i do enjoy metal work...

explain about the weatherstrips. my doors are fitting good but no weatherstrips yet.

my doors fit pretty good but with the stock weather-stripping the doors have trouble closing all the way. I'm trying some different rubber but i doubt it will solve the problem. get some door stripping and just tape it in to see if you can close the door. how is your belt-line lining up? mine took days to get right and the drivers side is still a bit off. these doors are very troublesome. they were building these trucks as fast as they could and the jigs weren't very precise.

LOL That mattress is a part of the team! Thats what the cab was on before we put it on the stand.

Slim we did hang the door before and after and so far everything looks good. So we will see how it turns out.

And Orrie my neighborhood is full of pompous jerks, lol, I think its pretty funny, we live in the county so there is nothing they can do about it, but I can only imagine what they say about me at the dinner table. I hope it makes them cuss.

Forgot to take pictures with the filler, I'll get those today, going to be working on the front fenders.

Greg, That belt line alignment has been an issue on every AD truck that I have seen. I have looked at a bunch of them and they are all off just a little. I got our about as good as you have the one in the picture above. I am planning on working on it a little more while I am doing body work just to see if I can get it better.

Funeral, Looks good. I guess I should have said something about the lead. I figured you already knew about it. I took the torch and melted it out and then while it was still hot I took a wooden paint stick to help remove the bulk of it and then followed up with a wire brush. It cleaned up nicely.

Ok guys, Back at it, Christmas is over and today we finished the other side (cowl), primed everything up pretty good, I'm going to put a full day in tomorrow so the pictures are coming.

Ok so I have been so busy between work in the studio and the truck my updates here have been very lacking. As far as the Cab goes we have deleted all the rust and laid down 2 coats of primer, I am pretty amazed this being my first job and doing 100% of the work in my front yard that A( No cops have come yet and B) Its looking so good.

I still have the under rubber to replace after paint and some work to do on the cowl vent (broken arm) but that should be finished tomorrow.

Looks good! I am not sure anyone answered your driveline question yet. You will never break the transmission with the stock engine. You can buy replacement ring and pinion gears that will get you some more road speed.
They are 3.55 gears and will supposedly allow you to go 60-65.

I hope you guys can help me with something. I'm having a hard time finding the Valve Lash Specifications on my 235, anyone know them?

Also, my Alternator wont mount up on this Generator mounting bracket, was curious if they made a bracket for the 235 for a 12v Alt, or do I need to fab one.

If you cant tell, it was too cold today to work outside so we stayed in the garage doing engine work ^_^
