Re: 72 GMC LWB 4x4 Project "How Much?"
It's looking good.
Any idea why the rear end sounds horrible? Worn out? |

That sucks the rear end is bad. Are you going to rebuild it yourself or have a pro do it? If you do it I would like to hear how it goes it difficult or not.

Re: 72 GMC LWB 4x4 Project "How Much?"
I want to do i myself, I bought the 14 bolt because the ease of gear setup. Im willing to do it myself I just don't want to ruin the $500 dollar locker due to a stupid mistake or something. I don't have anyone to show me how, so I will drop the 400 dollars to rebuild it... I was thinking maybe I could talk my axle guy into letting me watch and learn.

Re: 72 GMC LWB 4x4 Project "How Much?"
Ya, I finally got my rims for the rear made. The look funny to me as the backspace is very noticeably different from the front (until I swap in a 60). Other than that I have just been doing stupid small projects that needed to be dealt with, and I had been putting off . I rebuilt the rear brakes and replaced the cylinders, and repacked the wheel bearings. I got it road worthy and it drives great! I did run into one issue with my driver side lower shackle bolt punching through my header So frustrating to make so much progress and hit stupid snags like this. Makes it feel like a never ending battle. I will get some pics of the truck and my header problem a little later tonight.

Yep... Plenty!! It now sits on 33's with all 4 rims matching. I have still yet to address my gearing issues. I have had quite a few little snags. But she runs drives and looks ok. Will update with pictures asap. (my camera gave up the ghost, so they will have to be shotty cell pics for now)

Re: 72 GMC LWB 4x4 Project "How Much?"
Sorry for the delay!! My job finally fell to scrap, so my funding has been pretty short. Here are a few of the updates: New 383 stroker still on the stand, need to put the heads on and the rest of the parts. My 350 is knocking, only under load for whatever reason. I can rev the engine to like 6000rpm and it sounds great but as soon as I put it in gear and hit about 2500 it sounds like a spray can with bearings in it. This came about after I had replaced my valve cover gaskets that were leaking all over. So Im waiting for it to cool down so I can pull the valve covers n check the valves. It has been parked for the winter, I did drive the hell out of it last summer, and it did great on the new suspension and tires. I had to make my own brake line hangers for the rear end as I had ground everything else. I have yet to get creative enough to find a fix for my ebrake cables that are to short to reach my existing pulley cables, so I think I will put that off until I swap in disc brakes. I had to get a little creative for my exhaust routing as well, I had to cut the tips off for the new shackle flip and it was a little to close to my shackles/bushings so I rerouted them to the sides for now. Once the 383 is ready to go I will be running all new exhaust anyways. The rest of the stuff I have done has been so piddly that it hardly seems worth mentioning, stuff like re-routing winch wiring, re routing starter cables and the standard tune up stuff. I also finally figured out what Im going to do as far as interior, picked up some new race seats with provisions for 5 point harness. So I plan to run a cage inside that attaches to the frame and sliders, the new seats will mount to the cage and tubing will form a center console with sheet metal mounted to cover it, and new shifting linkage with be made to put my shifters nearer to my hands, all switches for lights, winch controls, electric fans will also be off the dash and on the console as well. Once the doubler is ready I will make a new custom cross member and start with the tube work. I cannot wait to be ready for paint although it seems so far from now. I have a new camera, welder cutting torches and job so updates shouldnt be so few and far between.

Wowwww!!! Its about time hahhaha!!!
Sucks to hear bout the funding troubles. I absolutly know the feeling of wanting to get progress on it but no funds to do it. Regardless, the trucks looking great!!! And it sounds like your going to have plenty of stuff to do in the future. Posted via Mobile Device |
