Can someone help me dis assemble the gears etc below the light (exterior) it has water on it and the shaft is rusty im going to clean it up also but I cant figure out how it comes apart, I took the pin out and all the screws, but 1 of the heads broke off, im giong to have dad help me take the broken screw out when he gets home..

Re: show your67 72 chevy spot light trucks
Ok, According to this FAQ thing I found..
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=403869 My inner tube retaining screw broke the head off the screw. I drilled the screw out (Brass I think?) But its still not budging, But maybe Im not holding/pulling something right.?

Re: show your67 72 chevy spot light trucks
It appears you are trying to remove the headpost from the housing. As indicated in the marked up photo below. the open hole is for the rotation adjustment screw. It screws in flush with the housing and does not have a head on it. It’s a set screw with a slot on top. To remove the headpost, drive the retaining pin out in the direction indicated below. If it has already been removed, there is nothing else holding the headpost in place except for friction or corrosion:
Normally I’ve been able to get the headpost out by wrapping the flange with duct tape, then wiggling it back and forth with pliers until it pops out of the housing. If this doesn’t work – mount the housing into a well padded vise. Then wrap a small gear clamp around the flange as tight as you can and start tapping on the screw on the clamp with a hammer and punch until it breaks free. If it is really cruddy inside, you might need to soak it in WD40 or your favorite penetrating oil first. When these were new they used some type of waxy grease that over time can become hard enough to break to teeth on the gears. Make sure to do all this on a clean work surface, preferably with a light colored towel on it so the parts don’t bounce around. The headpost is made up of several pieces and you want it to be easy to keep track of everything. If you cannot remove the headpost at all, it can help to remove the end cap from the forward end of the headpost housing and press up on the headpost gear from the bottom. I don’t have it indicated in the picture below, but the retaining screw for the cap is directly below the lamp on the bottom of the housing (it's the forward most screw). Normally I like to pull the headpost first, because it is easier to remove the cap by pushing out from the inside, avoiding the risk of damaging the finish by prying the cap off. But if you absolutely can’t get the headpost out, this may be the only option. Let me know which screw you have that is broken off, or if you have any more questions. |

Re: show your67 72 chevy spot light trucks
I broke off the inner tube retaining screw. I'll work on this again tonite when I get back (going to ice cream with gf shortly)
Thanks mark, that last post was VERY informative! I'll post pix when I get it all together/or on the truck. Whats a ballpark est. of what one of these things are worth in working condition? (Not sure if im going to install it or sell it to someone, dunno if I like the look or not)

Re: show your67 72 chevy spot light trucks
The values can cover a pretty wide range depending on the vintage of the light, but most important is the cosmetic condition of the lamp shell and the die cast chrome parts. I've bought them as cheap as $10, and seen them sell for as high as $150. eBay is loaded with listings that are way overpriced. Most don't sell for more than $50-$75 unless they have a rare and desirable mounting bracket that is unique to a specific application. There are also a few with very rare heads that can sell for up to $500, but old used spotlights with dings, dents, and pits in the chrome just aren’t worth very much.
In response to your earlier question, the bulb retaining springs are still available from Unity but are a bit spendy. So far I've always managed to come up with serviceable clips out of spare parts lamps. Here is a link to new replacements: http://unityusa.3dcartstores.com/U-6...ing_p_353.html If you want a mint condition lamp without much effort, you can also buy an 80's vintage lamp from eBay. I bought this one NOS for $25. I retained the vintage inner and outer tubes, and used everything else from the new lamp after adding the vintage emblem to the new lamp shell. To the casual observer it looks brand new and cost much less than a mint original or new replacement: |

Re: show your67 72 chevy spot light trucks
piggybacking onto what Markeb01 said. I just went to the garage and fate had it, I had a rebuilt headpost housing laying right there in front of my. once the tension screw and the locking roll pin is out, the headpost and flange is held in by a very slight press fit. If your is a bit corroded, I'd try some type of Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster, etc to where the flange meet the headpost housing. then, very carefully, insert a sharp screwdriver between the flange and housing and try ti get some movement up. be aware that there is a spring under the headpost flange!
if all else fails, pm me again. I can fix ya up, cheap!
