Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Sadly; nothing. It pains me to think of her sitting lonely out in the shop. But for me tomorrow is Saturday and the first thing on my list is to get a new SD card and "borrow" my wife's digital camera, then go take a bunch of pics of her (the truck). Then I can begin the tear-down for the rebuild she so very deserves.

one suggestion to go along with the camera, BUY A HIGH QUALITY 200 PAGE NOTE BOOK TO MAKE NOTES IN. The best thing I ever did.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Sounds like something I ought to do. I usually end up with a bunch of those 3x5 size notebooks packed ful of stuff, a single full size would be a lot easier to keep track of.

BTW, today I got to strip all the junk off of my 327, and got the heads off as well. Not as bad as others I've started with, but not great either. Should work just fine. Got the SD card too, so more pics are on the way in my build thread.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Another suggestion if you're computer friendly, is to convert that information into a computer spreadsheet. Particularly the brand name and part numbers of any components you install. I have a 7 page Excel spreadsheet with all the specifications, part numbers, suppliers, part applications, etc for my truck. I've included everything from the alternator bracket to the smog valve. It sure makes it easier years later when you're trying to remember what that part originally came from. It's also an easy way to keep a running total on how much you've invested, if this is something you actually want to know!

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Well, I've always grown up under the philosophy that you NEVER add up the receipts. Something I picked up from the guys who brought me up under the wrench. I do like the idea of keeping track of where everything came from though, but I'm afraid that spreadsheets are a bit beyond my abilities with a monitor and keyboard. I usually keep most of that information in my notebooks anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Me too, Mark. I have an Excel spreadsheet for all my builds and a 3 ring binder with receipts, parts warranty data, etc.

I started doing this when I built my Model A Hot Rod back in the early 1980's. The advantage to keeping this data is that when you swap major components such as motors, frames, doors, beds, cabs, etc., there can be problems with Johnny Law if you don't have proof of purchase information. Can you prove the parts on your truck aren't stolen or from a chop shop?

This is especially important if someone out of state or out of the country buys your truck. Typically this will require an out of state inspection. Some jurisdictions and/or inspectors will require hard copy information showing where the parts came from.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

With the help and expertise of two fellows, we spent a combined 9 hours trouble-shooting electrical gremlins on my '66 Chevy C10, only to discover, we still haven't correctly addressed the issue. Tomorrow I am putting a factory reproduction underdash wiring harness/fuse block, specific to a factory dash cluster with gauges. When I bought the truck, as a project, I put new harnesses in it, front-to-back. The underdash harness was for a factory dash cluster with warning lights. By plugging everything togehter with the factory plugs, it was draining the battery. I think we have isolated the drain, so hopefully, we can exorcise the demon.

Few things are more fun that taking that first trip after something has been apart for months (or years). I'm sure your daughter will remember the moment long into the future.

Good luck getting it fixed. Tough trying to fix something when you can't figure out what is wrong, particularly when you're upside down laying on your back much of the time.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I too am trying to figure out some electrical demons- I went to my first cruise/meet on friday night, everything was great until I got home. Sitting there waiting for the wife to open the garage the truck just died... no lights no nadda. The battery is good, got juice to the starter and alternator so I am replacing the ignition tomorrow...hopefully that will be the ticket! Wish me luck

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Started it for the first time since last September. Considering the amount of wiring to get an LT1/4L60E into a 63 I was amazed it started on the first try. Of course a couple of minor issues came to light but hopefully its driving by next weekend.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Worked on the '62 today - the '64 hasn't made any progress since I got it stripped to the frame, and I needed to work on something I could feel good about!!!
Tore the steering column apart to replace horn/signal switch and harness. Turns out (aside from the switch having disintegrated from age) that the PO had cut the wiring harness for an unexplained reason and tossed half of it. Now my horn works. Lights don't work, but everything is good at the switch...
Got the side window installed (previous passenger window broken out thanks to kids with rocks).
Replaced the choke cable and made some necessary adjustments. Starts WAY easier now.
Pulled the grille and bumper for a swap.
Attempted to install a different grille on her, then discovered (thanks to some help from this site) that the grille I had was for a large truck, not a pickup, so she's faceless...

Painted my 65 Impala Steering wheel (I'm putting on the truck this weekend).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I curled one of my lower control arms. Not a good thing, there was a steel plate in the road (Construction) and I nailed it. Sounded like a big gong and the truck almost came to a complete stop. Luckily I didnt twist anything or lose anything but I did manage to bend under my loweer control arm.

Lesson learned- Pick up the truck before you drive it!

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

After searching for over a year, i finally found a world class T-5 transmission from a v-8 camaro. 2.95 first and a nice tall .063 overdrive. this was like the hardest thing to get my paws on for my truck. Will bolt right in to the 62.
