Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Well I still have another year and a half before I go on terminal leave...I have served aboard the Bluebell, Sledge, Midgett and now I am currently on the Fir. Needless to say I am a little burned out...
But anywho, here are some pics of the new hood. I bought it from a guy that has stored it since 1976 so it's in pretty good condition. The only part that has major rust is a piece of the rear cross frame that supports the hood close to the windshield. Obviously it was stored sitting upright so I think some moisture got to it over time. But, no big deal, I'm gonna be cutting some holes in her pretty soon....I don't plan on keeping this hood permanently, just until I can find a 60-61 GMC hood.

Yea, biggest hassle for Joe is requalifying on every boat. It's not doing it but getting the stuff signed off, stuff moves real slow in San Diego. Plus they wanted him to stay over on off days to get signed off...not!

Yep...exactly why he is not re-upping. They offered him a cheesy bonus, he told them no thanks. Funny, they spend all this money training you guys and then offer no incentive to keep you and they wonder why nobody stays in! Military Upper Management is just a screwed up as the politicians in DC.

throwing an idea out...
cut the whole center out inside the V shaped bead, then weld in some material that is concave all the way up to the hole is for the carbs. |

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Like a mohawk? That would be kinda interesting......Maybe I'll photo chop some ideas before I actually "Cut" anything.....
I still haven't decided whether I'm going to cut two individual holes or one oval around the carbs....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Before you cut up a nice steel hood have you considered using a 2" cowl induction fiberglass hood. I know a lot of guys want to keep their trucks all steel but nobody makes steel reproduction hoods (that I know of). Just thought I'd throw it out there.
BTW, sweet ride man! |

Dang Cort, that would be too simple! A fiberglass cowl induction hood, who would have ever thought? Have you seen one? I am going to look around for one and see if I can find an image to post up.

Here is a picture of a 4 inch hood. I looked up cowl induction hoods and found tons of them steel and fiberglass.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
theres a company here in fl that makes their own steel cowl hoods.the company is down in below stark fl.you might call them and see bout them maybe helping you out on a hood. i don't remember their name but you can go to your search engine and type in cowl hoods, and it'll give names of diff companys. just trying to save ya from cutting a prefectly good hood.
oh the truck looks great and those carbs are neat looking good luck with your truck. |

Probably Kurt, I found a place in Hesperia, California. You can buy their fiberglass hoods factory direct.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
From what has been posted by other members pretty much all the fiberglass hoods and other parts are just crap. Definitely not worth the money and hassle. Twiggythedrummer has one from US Body Source in FL......he'll tell you all about it.
I wasn't aware there was anyone making steel cowl hoods for our trucks.....I'd like to see them.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Why not cut the two adapters used and weld them together making the whole setup shorter? The Y adapter and the intake adapter both bolt together, and that's what adds the height, right? Why not cut them both in half and get rid of the bolt-flange and make it one solid piece?
Tryin' to save some sheet metal here by sacrificing the new parts |

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
When you shorten it up, you will lose some of the ram effect.
I thought the same thing, just cut the mounting flanges and swap them, but you don't want to lose the height. Although with as much torque as this engine produces stock, it may not be too noticable, even though the increased CFM of the Strombergs livened up the engine. |

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Well I figure with as much height as it has over stock, that any changes (Shorter/higher on this setup) are far better than before anyways, even if it looses a bit of the tunnel ram effect.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Thanks for all the suggestions guys.....Though I won't be going with a cowl hood because it is not period correct. NOTHING that wasn't available before '63 (with the exception of a few small items) will be going on this truck.
I'm OK with cutting this hood up because the back bracket (close to the cab) is acutally rusted pretty bad with some rust through the hood above it. Here is a pic from yesterday at the Billetproof show......Notice I changed a little something, and I lOVE IT!

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Cort,
I don't have a pictures of this but I once saw a guy with the same basic setup as you (on a V-8) and he had a muffler shop bend the pipe for him to curve down and forward toward the rad. (think of the horns on a Ram). Give that some though.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Alright,
Here are some pics of the mock-up hood that I will be installing. I saved this hood from the crusher at the junk yard last week for $40! Seriously, it was #2 in line to be crushed the next day....I couldn't bear to see that happen. So the hood is pretty trashed, but the front GMC only grill is PERFECT! So eventually I will find an old 60-61 chevy hood, since they are easier to come by and then just crop and weld this piece in the chevy skin. The top skins are identical on the two hoods. Let me know what you guys think, and what style you like better! Also, suggestions are always welcome.... Look #1 Look #2
