Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Not real rare I guess, but here is how the factory paint turned out on my 66. Rubbed it out by hand, 'bout 30 hours worth of rubbing.

Classic v6 GMC's,

I'm trying to determine the paint codes on my '66 special paint. Any chance any of the yellow's in your GMC Truck Special Paint Color book end with either 555 or 686? Both of those numbers are written on the firewall of my truck.

The 555 is written over the word comfort. It's much more legible in person than in this picture because the 555 is in much darker, crisper ink.

Thanks, Dave

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Andy, that looks like it!

I held my phone up to the paint where a piece of trim is off and it looks like if it was polished up, it would match. I tried to have my wife take a picture of my phone and the paint, but the lighting in the barn was bad.

We named the truck banana the first time we saw it, so the icons i found above fit perfect.

Thanks, thanks, thanks

Dave

Any chance your going to carlisle truck nationals this weekend?

The lighting of my camera might make the color a little off as well.
We aren't going to Carlisle but hear that it's a great show.
Which motor is in your truck? 305 or 351? a 3 speed in a 3/4 ton is fairly unusual.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

It's a 305 w/ 3 speed on the tree. With 4.10. Not exactly a towing or hauling machine, first gear is kinda high.

Also came with radio delete. And hazard flasher.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Classic v6 GMC's, was you able to get a cross reference for your special paint code? I have been unable to find a cross reference for W83E5555 and the paint shop I checked with could not find a cross reference. They said the format did match anything they had.
Thanks, Dave

To reference the W83E5531 on my dad's truck I used this site.
http://paintref.com/paintref/index.shtml

I messed with it until I found it under code WE5531
http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...&button=Search

I tried WE5555 and it does not come up with anything.
http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...&button=Search

You might try and get your paint shop to try 555, 5555, WE5555
All the paint codes in my book start W83E5 so the important part of the code is 555
Thanks,
Andy

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

In 1964, was white a fairly common color?? Around here, most of the 60-66's were either gold or pea soup/diarrhea green, the odd one a light blue....

Andy, I was rereading this thread and saw you mentioned your truck had the firewall markings intact. I have two questions:

1) does your have the word Comfort written on the driver side lower firewall? I'm assuming your truck is Comfort. Mine does and it has the 555 written over top. Maybe yours has the 531 paint code there?

2) does your truck have an emergency flasher switch? Is there a EW written on the center left of the upper firewall? I'm thinking EW may have been for Emergency Warning. Two other truck besides mine had EW with the switch.

My '66 was a work truck, painted 519 School Bus yellow. That's what I intend to put it back to when I get that far.

Yes our truck has "Comfort" on the same spot as yours and the same circle around and under the brake booster. Our truck does not have the paint code in the same spot. Ours paint code was partially under the driver side inner fender and wrote as 5531.

Our truck does have the emergency flasher switch and a "ew" on the far passenger side of the fire wall.

Our truck also has the "Tinted W/S" in the same spot.

Does your truck have a "2T" around/under the brake booster and above the steering column. I think it stands for two tone paint.

I will have to check tonight. I know it has a circle around the brake booster bolt holes and some letters in that area. I think they at partially covered by the brake booster. I just assumed they were part of the brake booster markings.

Just starting restoration on a 1961 Chev Apache 10 in Tahiti Coral/White. This is the only truck I've ever seen in this color. 283ci/4spd truck.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Holy dog crap batman - someone else has one of these? LOL

I found a matching Tahiti Coral two-tone long fleetside identical to yours in a junkyard one time and found it super interesting because it also came with the special Sage Green interior which was only used with this Tahiti Coral exterior - totally different than the normal Bluish Silver interior color used in 1961. This year, I found a short bed BBW fleetside in this same two tone Tahiti and it has the Sage interior too - I just bought this truck so don't have pics but will take a couple later today and post them

Between me and you though, I think we are it for Tahiti Coral truck owners

So Tahiti was a one-year only color - post some shots of the dash and door panels etc inside yours

This truck does not have the Sage Green interior color. It has the standard interior colors. Radio delete, drivers only arm rest.

OK - cool - could be its not a Custom Cab - seems like that Green interior was offered on the Customs and both these I found are custom cabs....

Still wanna see more pics of this truck - send us a link to your online photo album

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

This is not a custom cab truck. I'll work on getting more photos. The truck is located at a relatives farm, he's the owner, I helping with the restoration. I did learn to drive in this truck when I was about 10 or so... some 45 years ago.

Sure - so GMC shared a lot of things with sister GM division Pontiac in the 50's and 60's and the color you see on Jon's restoration is called "Mesa Tan" on GMC and Corsair Tan on Pontiacs. Mesa was a solid color single stage lacquer where your trucks' Tahiti color was a "poly" color or metallic color. These metallic "poly" colors were started being offered on Truck interiors beginning in 1958, and seems like the first poly was Oriental Green in 58 for exterior colors - all others were still solid color mon-metallics. By 1961 Poly colors were being offered more widely for exterior choices so Tahiti Coral, Klondike Gold and Tampico Turquoise became available. GMC offered a more close match to your Tahiti color on its 1963 trucks called "Palomino Tan" but even it was non-poly. I don't know why I thought you needed to know all that, but too late now LOL
