Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

I once had a truck that would rub the harmonic balancer on the crossmember. Could be that.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

I have not trouble shot it at all. No symptoms unless I'm pulling a heavy trailer or under heavy load, and the truck has been pretty much parked since late fall. It's supposed to remain warm through the weekend so I might mess with it some then.

I never reported back on the grinding sound under hard acceleration. I can't say exactly what the culprit was, but it went away with the motor swap. The motor mounts were toast and I replaced them with polyurethane, and all the braces between the motor mounts and bell housing dust cover were loose / missing hardware. Everything went back together with new hardware and it hasn't made a noise since.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

It seems like forever since I did any real work on this project, but I finally picked up all my parts from the machine shop today. I have been accumulating parts this whole time, and I'm pretty excited to start wrenching.

The machine shop boiled and magnafluxed everything, honed the bores, surfaced the heads, valve job, polished the crank and checked everything out. Heads were reassembled with comp cams springs, locks, keepers and rotator eliminators. Freeze plugs and galley plugs installed along with new valve guide seals.

I procured a new timing set, cam, adjustable rocker studs and nuts, main and rod bearings, rings, a distributor (billet aluminum body) EGR block off plate and plug, block heater and of course gasket sets. Time to get wrenching!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Looks like the 50 shades of gray theme continues. Sprayed on of my junkyard sun visors to try out the classic coat and check the color. It is quite a bit lighter than my slate gray interior.

The floor mat, dash and center consol all match well. I need to play with one of those computer rendering deals to look at the color options. I like both of these grays, just need to see how it all goes together with the headliner fabric, door inserts and two materials on the seats.

That was three coats 10 min apart. Coverage looks good. Not sure I needed to do the third coat.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

I think that will probably look fine when you get it in the truck. Mine has stock unpainted red visors, seat and seatbelts, and SEM Firethorn red dash, door panels and trim. The shades of red are different, but you don't notice it in the truck. Even new vehicles usually have some different shades of color by design.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Haven't done much work on the truck lately. I had one of my old rusty rims with a slow leak around the valve stem so I dismounted it, hit it with the wire wheel and painted it. Decided I had better do the rest so they match. I got tired of dragging the compressor outside to air up every time I needed to move the truck to plow. -35F headed for -50F tonight.

Thanks Hankster. Yeah it is a little brisk and tough on the hardware. My last tank I'm my Tacoma was 10.3 mpg. Yay auto start.

More than half of Oregon is Gov land from desert to Cascades to rain forest to the coast. I have 32000 acres right out my back door all year long. This pic is in January, just a thought.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

That's gorgeous! I've spent a lot of time in Oregon and it would definitely be on my short list if I couldn't live here. My wife attended grad school in the western part of the state and I did two years of undergrad in Idaho and frequented the eastern half, but haven't spent much time in central Oregon.

I do like to recruit from our local university here, as this is not for everyone. That way potential employees have at least survived a winter!

Cool H1, is that yours?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Got a little done on the truck today. Straightened the rear bumper with a come along, replaced the back up lights with some LEDs I had sitting around, replaced the headlight switch and played around with my rammount/lifeproof iPad mount. I like it. Bluetooth connects to the stereo for tunes, gps runs map or nah software and I can control my gopro with it. I'll need to play around a bit with it this summer.

You and me both...

Put my AK Children's Trust plates on this truck and when I was bolting up the front I happened to be looking through the grille at a funny angle. Looks like someone took a machete to the wad of wires that service the right side lights. Lots of bare wires including my low beams etc and some good melted action. Cut everything back to good, crimped in new. Wrapped it all with electrical tape since I used all my loom on hand when I did the trailer brake controller. More on the way soon when I make my Waytek order. Now my one headlight doesn't come on with the parking lights and my side maker works. They had two wires switched.

Got a bunch of freezing rain last night so chained up the front axle to head to work for a bit. Crazy it's +35F here and east coast is getting hammered with below freezing temps. Made wiring outside for an hour yesterday no big deal.
