Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
I've always wondered which came first, Twin Arrows or Two Guns? I remember Twin Arrows gas and curios was open in the '90s. Until the past year I would make a few trips a year through there between my home and San Jose, CA.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
Took a friend for a cruise up to Williams. Went the back way, not on 89 to Ashfork.
When I turned right on Route 66 downtown Williams, did the granny gear along here. Parked on a side street and walked through the show. Headed east, towards Bellmonte. Some segments are dirt, but very drivable. This is the end of my east bound journey today. The concrete Route 66 just disappears under the Super Slab. Easy Rider, a scene was at this place.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
Kurt,
As always, thanks for sharing the continued drives down 66, most especially the abandoned sections some of us may never see, ...always intriguing for sure. It's amazing, after taking some photos out there years ago I remember saying how cool it was the camera made the sky look SO blue. Through the years, I've realized, it's not the film or the camera, ...the skies out west are really that blue

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
I stayed in Williams for several weeks in '93, while we worked on set construction for ''Natural Born Killers'' an Oliver Stone film. The propmakers were reconfiguring a simple trading post building into a fancy diner, with 5' diameter side porthole windows -- all for Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis to shoot to hell in the first scene. Location was somewhat north west of town. Maybe 20 minutes. Property belonged to a local businessman, who was also the local Chevy dealer. He loved my Stepside. And conned me into retuning the distributor advance to 20* ''for the Mountains." Ran like an abused ourangatang. I think his name was Harold Cake.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
Yes it's me.
Funny story about the FB name. My name is really Dan and I am always happy hence my name here. I got tired of Facebook sometime back, it was terrible. So I finally deleted my account. Decided to go back to catch kids and grandkids happenings. My friend in PA does customer wood work like the epoxy tables with lights in them etc. He does all kind of cool wood stuff and I always joked with him about his name. So that is where Mikey Gotwood came from. LOL. Sorry for the post, don't want to hijack the thread, but you asked. Ha ha. Love your pictures, your truck and your adventures! |

Considering Brian is now in Meadview, only an hour+ from Kingman, it's just west of many of the roads Kurt is driving. We do have to get out there and do some exploring. I don't think Kurt realizes how much this thread is feeding addictions for those of us who don't get out there as much as we'd like

Being a guide, that would be fun. Does this forum have local sub-groups that do cruises (not the hard park car shows)?

I don't think you know I'm doing this on purpose! I'm tired of seeing everyone's trucks in their garage, shop, driveway, street, parking lot, and not on the road. But that's just me.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
My wife and I were at the Pine Breeze Inn a few years ago on a trip west.
Looks like the pole that held the 76 neon sign is still there.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
Thank you, made my day!
Since I'm here... this is one section nobody can drive on, and hiking is a challenge too. The Ashfork Hill section can be seen from the Super Slab (south), each end is cleaved like a knife. The Cliffrose and Juniper is really taking over. Because it's difficult to get here, no books (that I have seen) show it. It was two lanes, no passing lane. First picture, when you look over the sign across the freeway, is where I got the hood that was posted a while back.

Re: Cruised abandoned Route 66 in Arizona
I'm thinking this should be in Arizona Backroads if there was such a magazine.
