There's way too much male bonding going on up in here! Hey John, when are coming over to help on this truck project? Amarillo isn't TOO terribly far away!

If you just do a little driving, you'll find my house easy in Noble. Don't hit the Satellite though, it's on jack stands

Re: John's Project

Hey Occifer I only drunk I was thought! Sometimes the fingers type faster than the brain can think!

Hey Bruthaman we may have to do that! Always wanted to hit the big steak house out there.

I'll have to go do some driving Wednesday when I'm off then Blake.

Well I didn't do squat on the truck this weekend. Then yesterday I went out to the house of the guy that is building the motor. It's looking good. He had to do some checking on the pan that is on this motor, and my crossmember to make sure it was gonna work. He's got the Thumpr cam in, and is in the progress of working on the heads. So progress is coming on the engine. That is why I haven't been doing much else to the truck is because of funds being saved for the engine. No pics though I forgot to take the camera!

Re: John's Project

Hey I mentioned in an earlier post that I'm not the best for pictures. I'm more of a do something and then think later "Man I should have taken a pic of that" I've never been a big picture taker. I can take you on a vivid journey though with my witty and thoughtful project poetry.

Re: John's Project

There's not much to look at now. If you've seen one motor tore down you've seen them all. The rotating assembly is done. Stock style pistons, with a Comp Cam Thump'r Cam. The engine block was bored about 20 over. He is finishing up the heads now which are 202's. We are going with a Edelbrock Performer Endurashine non-EGR intake. Edelbrock 650cfm elec choke carb. Then that is all he is doing to it. He has an engine stand that he will run the motor on to both break in the cam, and make sure everything is good to go before I get it back. My cousin has some headers we are looking at, but until we get it in the truck not sure which ones we will go with. He has a set of shorties, and long tubes. My uncle tried the shorties in his 85 and he had clearance issues. So will probably go with the long tubes. I am going to get some brackets to flip-flop the alternator, and a/c compressor. They aren't anything fancy, but will clean up the a/c hoses all over the engine bay. I'm considering painting the engine a cast gray color, and then with the alum/chrome valve covers, and intake, and then an alum/chrome air cleaner I think it will be nice. Then all my bracketry will be black, and I'm going to paint the engine bay a satin black. Then I am meeting the engine up with a 700R4 tranny. Still don't know any specifics on the tranny. Need to call the guy that rebuilt it to see if it's just a basic rebuild, or if anything was done to it. My uncle was going to use it in a 54 Chevy truck he was building for a guy, but they went with something different, so my uncle held onto the 700R4.

Sorry for it being so long, and I'm sure some may want more specific info, but that's all I have. I don't know much about all the different numbers when it comes to cam's, crankshafts, and such. I'll try and find out any info anyone wants though, just ask. I'll get some pics of the engine when it gets assembled, and has some of the goodies on it.

That sounds like one helluva motor/trans setup. Can't wait to see it.

Thanks I hope by the time he gets it done I have everything squared away to be ready for it. Really need to tighten up the budget!

Re: John's Project

Hey John, nice project. I think you're right about the grille, the '85-'87 looks better on your two-tone'er. The rallys and the tank look great. But what really caught my attention is that air cleaner. Is that thing stock or is it from an earlier GM product?

I also have another question. Do you still have the lift kit and would it fit a 3/4 ton?

Thanks
Benjamin.

Re: John's Project

Thanks for the compliments. That's what really keeps me motivated is comments, suggestions, and other peoples trucks.

The air cleaner is stock for the early to mid 80's trucks. In 87 they went back to the short air cleaner.

I never got any bites on the lift kit. I still have it, but PreRunner has already put his name in for it. You may pm him and see if he's still serious about having it, and maybe he'll pass and let you get it. I'm not sure if it would fit a 3/4 ton or not. When you go to Fabtech's website they don't show any kits for the 73-87 trucks anymore. I'm not as familiar with the 3/4 tons, but the kit is only the coil springs, upper ball joint spacers, and then blocks for the rear. So I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I'm probably going to paint some on the frame tomorrow. I'm like you I need to order some tank anti-squeak stuff ordered. The stuff I had fell all apart. Gonna start cleaning the engine compartment up getting ready for the engine.

Re: John's Project

Looks good John. reminds me of the 94 GMC I used to have.

If you have read my thread here you can tell that there isn't anything here worth writing home about either, but it's nice to hear peoples ideas, and thoughts on what you are doing or thinking about doing. The worst build thread is the one not posted.

I haven't made as much progress on the truck as some would have, but it's getting there. I'm in no big hurry. I just bought it to enjoy, and to have something to tinker on. I'm sure everyone here knows how day to day activities can get in the way of progress. That and somedays I just look at it, and say "Eh I don't want to mess with it today" That's the best part of it not being my daily driver. My old truck I couldn't do much to it that would have it inoperable. This one I can, I'll just miss being able to hop in it and drive it! , but it will be for the greater driving experience later!

Re: John's Project

yea.. I am gonna compile my pics on my 83 at a later date and give a start to finish thread... hehe to keep from having to hear.. "where's the updates man?" lol right now I just finished what you were doing, pulled both tanks off, cleaned, and painted them, and reinstalled them, nothing special, just routine maintainace to get it running. my old 305 runs ok. it has the factory 700R4 in mine. everything shifted out beautifully. the only major issue I have found is the factory rearend.. can you believe it has a 2.41 factory gear.. geeze... I thought the 3.08 under my 89 were bad on excelleration.. I like at least a 3.43 under a cruizer.. one of these days lol

Re: John's Project

Yeah a rear end gear will be on the to do list. A 3.42 gear would be an good gear ratio to have.
