Re: Jim Bob a build thread

Hey Motornut, I have something that may or may not help out. My grandfather used to have an old wooden boat and he would paint it every year. Every few years he would take it pretty far down, sometimes all the way to the wood and start fresh but most times he would only sand it down a coat or 2, level it off and paint it up. He used the roll-and-tip method. Basically, he'd thin out the paint and roll it on, then go over it with a brush and just brush the texture out of it. It really made the paint lay down nice. If he had a spot with brush strokes or orange peel, he used to sand it with I believe 1000 grit, then finish with 1500 grit and then compound until it was shiny again. Some people would swear it was a fiberglass hull it came out so straight and shiny. Also, a few years ago I got my hands on a 1978 or 79 Monte Carlo parts car but it ended up being in better condition than I thought. It was painted with a brush and seemed to be uneven and had strokes in it but it had a good amount of paint. I was able to block sand, then I stepped down in grit until I was able to buff it with a foam pad. I only had to do the roof because it looked like it had a landau top that some had taken off and didn't want to paint the whole car. It came out pretty good and it had a shine that almost matched the rest of the car that had been sprayed. I think the roll and tip method would end up with the best results now if you were to sand down and level the base that is already there. You'd be suprised how well you could get it to lay down with the right brush

good idea, kinda what i was doin and may try on the hood, a thinner mix after sanding
wanted to do another coat Wensday, but it's not all dry yet.Might take a couple of weeks again.heck i looked at a new car black paint job this am almost as bad orange peel but not as deep.wondering if a thinner mix would bubble the other coats tho thats my worry.but it's a great shine.and it won't rust.and i figure a top coat even every year is cheap
