Re: 49 GMC Pickup
My god people are so ignorant. I doubt a scrap yard couldn't "sell" something. Scrappers are the dirtbags always driving beater trucks that should be scrapped, not half the stuff they are scrapping. Makes no sense to destroy an old relic like this. You'd think with all these garbage "hotrod" shows on tv these days and all these "way" overpriced auctions, this would make these simple minded folks think they can strike gold. Such a shame. I'v bought almost all my projects that were on their way to the scrap yard. can't wait till I finish up my next one and show they guy I got if from whats up. The first time I tried buying the truck we were like 50 bucks apart, I said I'm paying more than you can get for scrap, but he didn't care. I eventually got the truck, the 49' I'm doing.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Never thought about that, but knowing the people that own this yard, they would never go for it... Too money hungry. Pretty sure all of the scrap they shred goes to China!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Oh I could vent for days. Scrapping drives me nuts, luckily I have alot of land to keep stuff so I don't have to scrap. I'd rather not support an industry that just fuels killing off all antiques. NOT to mention yeah it just all goes to china and gets turned into more junk. This day and age we are so money hungry because a 5 year old car isn't good enough, if something breaks we want new, new, new. I get so disgusted with the thought of all this stuff that is worth SOOO much more than what they buy it for, getting turned into true worthless crap. Been wanting to start a site called the rescue network, thats kinda like a CL for anything old that is knocking on the shredders door. Here is the shirts I made for it.

99 to life;
That "cash for clunkers" deal that was going on a couple of years ago really did get rid of some really great old cars. How you can"t find any old parts for cars . Like you said this NEW junk is totally junk in a couple of years. Just nothing left to rebuild. Tim |

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
oh yeah that clunkers deal was the worst. I have a heard from a few different industry guys that deal was terrible. Were I'm at, all the salvage yards, if you can find one. are just drying up. you can't find hardly anything anymore unless you luck out or go on CL.
Its a very sad cycle, no one is gonna rebuild a newer chevy 40 years from now. cause they are gonna be gone and not worth dealing with. What we are restoring now is it, there is no new huge wave of old cars and trucks. Wars don't help the industry either. again government crap that just destroys the auto industry. guess they rather make bullets to kill people than keep a cool antique on the road.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
I heard that down around DC a 1985 Maserati was traded in during cash for clunkers. It was blown and scrapped! Complete travesty! Not what we are doing, and nothing I would go after, but still a vehicle worth saving.

99 to life n Billys68SS;
Every one around here laughts at me when I pull out my old 78 Chevy 1/2 ton pu. I use to to haul scrap metal to the recyler or trash to the dump. When I need gravel or dirt for the yard or drive way I take the Old chevy. Ha Ha. It has a 350 V8 2bld 350 trans n 308 rear end. It set for weeks on end, then when I need to use it I ck it over n it starts with just a little primer to carb. The trans was built in 1988 an has never been open or fluid changed, been behind 4 engines over the year. I just call her"the old lady" Tim |

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Got my cab this past weekend and found out that although it is in not as good condition as I had thought, it has been away from my viewing for over a year... Lol, I got a little surprise when I got there. It turns out the hood that was with the truck when I got it is actually a GMC hood, the GMC radiator support is there along with fender braces, running board brackets and a slew of other parts. I also found when I removed the seats that were just sitting in it holding moisture, that there were some NEW goodies stored underneath. I haven't sorted all of that out yet, but I know there are new door handles and some interior hardware. I'll get some pics up as soon as I get my daughters car done and get it off of the trailer.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Another relic I've saved recently. It has a 350 with 2speed powerglide. The body is rough and the interior is trashed, but it's complete, runs drives and stops. Don't know what I'm gonna do with it yet.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Looks like a 65 it should have a 283 or 327 unless it's been swapped. Does it have a cannister filter or spin on?

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Yes it's a 65. It's originally a 327 car. Engine is a 327/350 3970010 block. Don't know any other specifics. Will find out more once I drop the pan. Probably won't do that for awhile though. It's not a priority, I just had to have it. Save it from scrap. I'm getting another old Imp soon. Will post pics when I get it home.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Thanks rusty. I'm for sure going to. It's just been difficult to get much done lately when so many other things need my attention. I plan to spend some time on it this week so there may be some progress to report by the end of the weekend.
Thanks for checking back!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Finally got a little bit of progress. I built a cab cart on the cheap with some scrap lumber I had laying around. I'll build something nice one day, but this will work for now. I did spend a little on the wheels, but that's because it had to be mobile on the outside.
I got the cab on it and cleaned out a bit. Don't really like what I found, but oh well. It's going to need a whole lot of love in the sheet metal, but I have big plans for this so it's going to get done. Gonna start ordering a few of the more complex patch panels here shortly. I bought a sheet of 18g so I plan to make some of my repairs from that. Here's some pics of what the cab looks like. Photobucket is acting up so I'm gonna stop here and I'll add some more pics tomorrow from my laptop. It's probably the iPad app.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
More pics of the cab
All four inside corners were filled with spray foam and then there was bondo slathered all over the outside. This one is after I did a little grinding on the bondo. It will all get cut out and new metal put in. Corners are shot!

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Now for the good stuff!
I got the front end mocked up on the other cab so I could see how much more to trim from the frame horn area and start getting my radiator support and inner fenders trimmed in. I also finally got around to ordering my new radiator and electric fan assy. Just need to figure out how I want to support it. Im thinking in going to build some over under brackets and see how that works out. I have to work Saturday, but hopefully gonna get some work done in the evening and all day Sunday. Ill try to post some more progress by the first of the week.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
yeah billy, nice grip of pics. you know we like pics. That cab is about what most of the eastcoast cabs look like. held together by anything sticky, or scrap metal yada yada. Lot of work replacing all of that, but its good to know if done right and sealed up, it will last far longer than the original.
as for patches go, I made this prototype inner cowl, I'll be making more. if interested PM me.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Well I've been plugging away at my truck as much as possible. Working as much as I have been has really put a damper on how much time ive had to spend on it.
Since I got my radiator and fan I have been working on the mounting of them. I almost have my radiator support finalized... at least in my head. LOL. I still have some more trimming to do to it, and it will be ready to accept the radiator the way I want it to. I have to make mounts for the radiator after that. I did build a fan shroud to hold the fan in place. Once the radiator support and radiator mounting location is finalized, in reality... then I will only need to make some mounting tabs for the fan shroud. Here are a few pictures. I started with a piece of 22g galvanized that I have had laying around for some time. Cut it out to the size I wanted and bent the corners over to form a box. Then I cut out the access for the radiator hoses. I made everything square so it was easy to make. I bent up and welded in some 1/8"x 1/2" flat stock inside the box to add support. Then I centered the fan and marked the perimeter with a sharpie. I then took 3/4" body tape and taped it to that line. I ran the sharpie around that tape and removed the tape, giving me a 3/4" lip inside the outside circumference of the fan. This is what it looked like at that point. Then I cut the center out just inside that line. I rolled and formed a piece of 1/4" round bar to a 15" circle. I centered that inside the previously cut out hole and welded that in place. I then rolled the metal around the round bar. This is what it looks like now. The inside.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Now for the good part. LOL I scored yet another project in my pile. I picked up this all original (minus engine and trans) 1968 Impala this past weekend. It needs a total restoration, but its all there. It had been sitting in the back of a farm in the edge of the woods for somewhere between 15-30 years. Original miles in the 22k range.

Re: 49 GMC Pickup
Thanks AD. No, the green one is my brothers 70. We had a 70 back in the 80's and he has always wanted another one. So now he has 2. The green one is an all original car that has been bark kept for a number of years. The only body damage is the right front fender, but we have spare parts! :-). Only problem with the car is he doesn't have a title. We are going to see what the process is for getting a title for my 68 and then try to get one for his 70. His other 70 is a driver. When he blew up his daily he was driving it every day. It has been sitting for a little while, but he can get in it and fire it up and go at any time.
