Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Thanks Scott, I think it was worth the work. I love the way a cowl hood looks and a stock hood wouldn't clear my motor the way it is set up currently. I also would have had to completely rebuild my stock hood due to all the rust which would have been a lot more work.

Keith your truck is looking sick man. I love it. Nice work on the gaps, I'm getting ready to go down that final gap road myself. Love that pic you have as your profile now.
also, that cowl hood on it is just right. Perfect. |

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Thanks Jimmy it was a lot of work but worth it. I love the way the cowl hood looks on there. I wish I had your ability and confidence to paint, your truck looks great.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Spent another day on the hood, I now have over 30 hours into this thing but I do really love the way it looks now. Don't mind the shiney spots the primer didn't dry yet.

Next week I have to fix the passenger side door fender gap and put in my Slosh Tubz, then she is finally coming home for good so I can finish the bodywork and paint it.

Thanks for reminding me Mike this weekend I had a bit of a breaking point where after we cut the hood for what seemed like the 50th time, I was sick of working on it. I started thinking about how I have been working on this thing for 4 years and it still only looks like this. I had to walk away for an hour or so and when I came back my brother had finished up welding the hood again and I just started grinding. This old girl has really tested my patience and I don't have that much to begin with. I told my wife yesterday that what kills me the most is that for all the time and money I invested in this truck I could have just waited and bought a truck that needed no rust repair or paintwork and then put my suspension and wheels on. I would have been driving it 2 years ago

I know how you feel Kieth, it seems like you work your butt off and empty your wallet and nothing changes. With the end result you'll be proud to say you did the work your self.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
I havent even gotten to put on body panels yet and I feel frustrated also. Rearend issues, rust, driveshaft issues, list goes on and on, lol. But like Jason said we can look at it in the end and say that is bad@ass and I built it.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Its a good feeling when you can say you've built it yourself. I'm a pipeline welder and a lot of guys ask me where I bought the bed at on my welding rig, " I didn't buy it, I build it myself". It makes a person proud.

Your build is coming out really nice. I am amazed what you did with your hood and fenders...

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Thanks, I wish I could have found a nice original rust free front clip like you did but being from the northeast that does not exist. Everything here has rust my only option was fix my rusted out stuff or go with new repops. I'm glad I did go with new stuff because the fenders and core support fit great and even though my hood needed a lot of work to fit correctly it still was less work then fixing rust on my originals. Plus it is a lot easier to weld on new metal instead of rusted metal.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
Hey Keith,
You might have said this somewhere, but where did you get your fenders? It looks like I'm going to have to replace one of mine, and I'm hoping I can find one that fits right.

I got them from Auto-metal direct. They are triplus. I actually bought them from Jegs cause they had free shipping. Check craigslist too, I think I seen some on there locally.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB
I've only seen 67-68 on CL lately. I checked Jegs and they want $99 ea truck freight. So much for free shipping. They'll ship an engine or a trans for free, but not a fender. Go figure. I need to get a good right fender. Mine is fixable, but the shop quoted more than a new fender will cost, so might as well go new if I can find one that fits decent. I don't think I have a lot of hope locally for one better than what I have.
