I was actually staring at the thing yesterday trying to figure out if I should pull the motor first or pull the cab first. The wife pulls in and lays on the horn. "Lets Go, Its not like you are going to actually work on that thing" Man made me a bit mad and determined. Something will come off this thing this weekend.

Looking at the steering the shaft that comes through the firewall is that connected inside or is it held on by the two bolts under that C shaped band? I pulled the two bolts, but I couldn't pull the shaft. I figured I'd leave everything inside intact until I'm ready to tackle the cab, but wanted to start pulling things off the firewall that would get damaged when I live the cab off to tackle the rest of the frame.

steering shaft??

are you referring to the column? if so it is one piece(solid shaft) from the steering wheel to the gear box....

Thanks Joe. Yeah I was looking at the end that connects to the steering box trying to figure out how to get it off or do I need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off and pull it down.

I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I do have a book laying around some where.

you will either need to take the 2 bolts out that hold the rag joint on the flange at the box or take your column loose under the dash then remove the bolt at the gear box that is perpendicular to the shaft and slide/pry the coupler up and off of the gear box shaft...make sense??
the easier way would probably be to take apart the rag joint if it has bolts and isn't riveted together ...

Thanks Joe. I could be wrong, but I think they are riveted. It just didn't look easy to pull the rag joint apart. Either way I'll just give it a go this weekend so I can start getting this thing apart.

As well I'd like to start taking some measurements so I can build a stand to hold the cab once I take it off. I don't plan on building a fancy flip over type of thing as of yet, but I'd like to be able to take the cab off and sit it on something other than the ground to avoid bending sheet metal.

The column is also attached at the firewall on the engine side. Just a little FYI.....

Get after it this weekend and you'll show her.....

Sorry it took me so long but here's some pics of what I mentioned about the chain to pull the motor. Hope it helps!

Overview

Installed a long Grade 8 bolt in the front to attach the chain to.

Looped the chain around the rear of the intake.

Just find the sweet spot on the chain and it will pull out level. Good luck!!

Oh, now I see how you did it I thought you went around the motor which I coudln't picture. You went around at an angle.

That sucker must have really good brakes - with the drive shaft ending up in the engine compartment and all.

That motor is sitting on the slab with clutter on/around/under it. It's an abandoned relic at the moment...
