Re: My 1st 68 panel
It also says it should have come with a power glide so I am pretty sure it is not the original engine since this thing was originally 3OTT

Re: My 1st 68 panel
I have never seen the suffix before the "date" on the pad, it normally starts with the below:
Code Engine Plant Code Engine Plant F Flint (Motor) S Saginaw Service H Hydramatic T Tonawanda K St. Catherines, Ontario V Flint (Engine) (McKinnon Industries Canada) M GM of Mexico Then I started thinking the first M was the plant so the suffix was just M, that lead to the 1958 283 with Manual trans like you pointed out. Looking into plants and when they opened in Mexico, the earliest one was 1981. So that's not it. Square 1 Maybe an early replacement engine? http://www.chevy-camaro.com/faq/chev...-decoding.shtm They were stamped with an M or ML at one point before CE. Found this this: http://www.v8s-series.freeservers.com/sbc.htm Says that casting was used on for some 327 builds. Last edited by Travisarmenta; 04-25-2019 at 02:41 PM. |

Travis
This is the link to the page I used http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html Once on that page click on the "Click here for Chevy Engine Code Listings" link That will take you to the suffix code section for which I clicked on the HR - TBS link That takes you to here http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-6.php them scroll down to the MM section. I got your text earlier and will take some pics later. I had to come in early to work to go install a scoreboard at a local school so they could use it this afternoon. Getting ready to leave in a few to go to a sign change out for a dental place that has to be done after hours. Hoping to not get wet but not sure what this bipolar B**** has in store for weather.

Re: My 1st 68 panel
If you take this info:
A number of crate motors made by GM in Mexico, may have an "M" or "ML" prefix stamped into the front pad of the block followed by a series of numbers which is the serial number ofthat particular crate replacement motor. You may also see a raised casting on the block or heads of "Hecho en Mexico" which means "Made in Mexico". Many of the new GM crate motors are being made in Mexico. Later model crate engines, sold over the counter by Chevrolet or GM Performance Parts, may have different prefix code identifiers stamped in to the front pad on the block, such as "ZZ3" or three letter codes such as "XXA". http://www.chevy-camaro.com/faq/chev...-decoding.shtm and combine it with this info: VF292800 – is an example of a over the counter crate engine. “2800” is the last 4 digits of the GM part # for the crate engine assembly. The final digit could be a year code. Another example: A Targetmaster engine (p/n 14009800) built in 1985 could have a code stamped as follows: A0198005 (A = january, 01, 9800 = pn, 5 = 1985) http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php With the MM being in first and the 800 being in the at the end it may have been a transitional period at the mexico plant for the crate engines. Just throwing ideas out there. |

Re: My 1st 68 panel
I think you may be right. If you look at the picture I took in post 150 there is some lettering above the casting number. after cleaning that off earlier is says "Hecho en Mexico which means this would definitely be a crate 350 makes the decision to snatch it out all that much easier and just get another one or rebuild one of my old school ones. Crate would go much quicker and if you have not noticed, I already have a few other things under way

HA! I can't believe that was a thing back then! I bet it cost a fortune to have all of that installed.
Glad you were able to get that thing. Save what you can and burn the rest, my eyes cant take it. |

Re: My 1st 68 panel
On the truck buddy buckets there are two wood platforms - for seat and back support. This suburban console looks like a metal base/platform for seat - is that correct?

Re: My 1st 68 panel
It is. And it has threaded inserts embedded into the wood that allow it to be attached to the hinges.

Re: My 1st 68 panel
Vin
I knocked this out this afternoon. I am going to do the plywood top tomorrow then I will figure up how much time to see what the costs would be if I made a few. This one is out of 16 ga galvanized since it was all I had. The hinges are actually just .125 plate so they were pretty easy to lay out with the plasma. They could still use a little filing and smoothing. .

Re: My 1st 68 panel
So.....messing around with this foam, has anyone put the new foam on buddy's before? Does this look right? Is it supposed to attach to the frame with glue or does the cover basically hold it in place? It does not seem to fit "just right" to me

Re: My 1st 68 panel
on the orange burb I have started parting out I was able to grab some of the parts to keep for this ole girl. The sun visors were in fantastic shape so I kept them. It had an ole school SW tach that mounts on the column that I am going to use unless I get another decent factory tach. I also pulled the lower column cover and Ebrake cover that they had chromed. Not sure if I will use them or not but my E brake cover was missing anyway. The screws are stripped out on the rear sill plate so i am hoping to get them drilled out without damage as well. Not real sure that it is needed since I am keeping the wood floor exposed and it does not have one now but sure as I let it go, I will need it.
not much else has been happening at the moment due to work load. .
