They actually look pretty handy. Setup for a clevis so they can be pulled with a drawbar or receiver. I saw that one this morning first time I'd seen one.

I have been using it here and there for work stuff. Nothing new on the truck except for lots of gas run through it. Between the flatbed on the truck and my 18 foot trailer, I can haul a lot of stuff. That big block and 456 gears don't care what I put on it.

Since its been doing what I need, I pulled off for awhile and have building a 78 model lwb to swb conversion truck.

Nice looking truck. I really like your shopping for 'made in the usa' parts philosophy. I want to do the same thing on my truck because I don't like to fix the same thing twice due to crappy imported parts. How have you been tracking down your domestic parts? Is there a website to shop from or do you shop at each manufacturer separately? Thanks for sharing a great build..Glenn

I decided this winter's project was to work on the dually some more.

You can't say I'm not a patient man. I looked and saved for over a year before I found what I wanted.



Scoti is going to say this is an extension of some homoerotic fantasy I have about the movie "Urban Cowboy". He hates these wheels with a passion. His dually had them when he bought it, and I thought he was gonna take them off and drive it on the hubs before he'd be seen sporting a set.



Next is to remove the old mud grip tires, figure out what I need to do to polish them some, and get new valve stems ordered. Probably new center caps too. The included caps are kind of shabby and new ones are fairly reasonable priced.

I'm sitting here now with several online shopping carts opened. The lowering stuff and six new E range tired are gonna be a tough pill to swallow.

Here is what the truck looks like now as a reminder. Yes, my shop is an old converted horse barn. I'm not proud. No ridicule please.



The reason I've been slacking on this truck is that I have been throwing together a clapped out half ton. Long story short, but I got beat out of a pretty bad ass little truck I had by a family member. He abandoned a junky long bed 78 model when he left with my truck so I figured I'd just build the longbed to keep my mind occupied. Shortened frame, Craigslist stepside bed, some lowering components and a whole lot of work and very little money.

Those Alcoa's will look great on that truck, especially vs. the chrome "simulators". I didn't get to see the other half ton but that little stepper is cool as sh!t.

This is the other truck. I had literally put a new GM crate engine in it that week. I try not to think about it much anymore. Worst screwing I ever took in my life by a long shot.

That reminds of the one I fixed up with my daughter that was stolen and stripped. Only way I got past it was to replace it and forget about it.

Did you ever find a hydraulic bell housing for the dually?

Yes and no.

What I wound up doing, but haven't installed yet, is a work-around that another member here turned me on to.

Advanced Adapters bracket that mounts late model slave cylinder to earlier bells.





I have it all ready to go on the shop floor. I'm collecting lots of parts to do a bunch of work all at one time. Rearend swap to 4.10 gears (from 4.56), rebuild suspension, possibly lower the truck a bit too. My parts are filtering in from Rockauto and the pile is growing.

BTW, the stepper turned out cool.

They are pretty close to me. Say 30 miles or so. But, the fireman in me has to try and polish them myself. I think I'll take them to the station tomorrow and try and spend some time in the evening evaluating what I need to do.

I did take them by the tire shop today. Two of the mud grip tires were not too bad, so in exchange for busting them down for me, I just gave him the old tires. Win-win deal on my end.

Your old horse barn is nothing to be ashamed of. I know lots of guys that would love to have something like it. Right now I could use that space myself along side my 22x28 that's packed to the rafters.

The stepper turned out nice, just needs to be made 1 color. And I'm happy to see you back on the dually. I have 1 I need to bring back from Idaho. I'm planning to use a freightliner rear bag suspension on it. It's an extended wheel base flat bed 72 that was a lumber hauler.

I polished the wheels on my C-10. PITA but not that hard. About 4 hours per wheel.

I'm optimistic overall. I grabbed some polish and gave it about two minutes of lovin' (that's what she said) and it looks hopeful. That's Texas sky and the back window of the truck reflecting in it. I figure I'll start with that acid wash that they use on big truck wheels then sit in my living room with towels down and polish them one at a time. I doubt I'll sand much. My truck is shabby and I'm not one for high maintenance vehicles.

Thank you. The barn is pretty derelict, but I'm damn grateful to have it. I came from a very poor childhood. We had no phone, no tv, not even gas to run the stove or water heater in our house. I took cold showers and ate cold food until I went off to college. When my grandmother died, no one could get ahold of us to tell us since we had no phone, until someone finally sent word through the secretary at the school to go get me out of class and tell me several days later. I got lucky and won an academic scholarship that allowed me an education and a career. The education was helpful, but I think the memory of being dirt poor served me better. I'm very grateful and appreciative of the things I have in my life now.

You do run steelies on the inside. Alcoa is very adamant about that in their literature to only run them like that. I'm guessing it is an economy thing, plus these wheels are thick and two of them would run out of wheel stud length.

I'm going to try and butter up somebody at Alcoa enough to get a new set of decals. That way I can do a full restore and finish them off with nice new stickers. Barring that, I'll have my wife make them on her sign cutter.

My past is just a few blocks up the road from you (we had hot running water and tv and phone, not much else) but it just reminded me of one of my favorite movies. I think a past of hardship makes a survivor, an appreciation for comfort, and sharpens the ability to adapt and find alternative solutions. All things seen through your thread and a bit in my Jimmy build.

No disrespect taken at all. I have a saying I use (usually muttered under my breath about some silver spoon person)......."I may not be able to outspend you, but I will outsmart you".

I'm pretty damn poor most times, but I want to build trucks and I always figure out some way of doing it without going into debt.

Much Rockauto stuff en route and here collected. I'm freshening up the front suspension and swapping the rearend, which I will also freshen up. It may be a few weeks till any real progress happens, but when it does, it should be a lot.
