Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
I happened to have my bed off when I installed
Mine , so I took the rear crossmember and bumper Off and slid my tank in the frame. I have a 7.5" Drop in the rear and no clearance issues |

Here's what a K20 looks like on top when bolted to the bottom of the frame, I also used large rubber washers and large body washers on each side of the alum flanges. I would like to go ahead and pull the rear cross member and slide the tank between the frame rails and space it up about 1/2"

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
I can't remember if the filler cap came with the filler door assembly, but they list all those parts on the web site. Just go back to the web site that I quoted previously. The filler cap is nice because you don't have to take the cap off to fill the tank. The fuel nozzle just pushes a flapper open when you insert the nozzle. As far as the fuel tank vent, I just used a flexible fuel line from the roll over valve on the tank with an in line fuel filter, just to filter the air so no dirt enters the tank. Then a small plastic diff breather hose end. I routed the hose along the filler tube and looped it higher then the filler then back down. Thinking about it now, I guess I could of welded a fitting into the filler spout. The electrical for the pump and gauge runs down the left side of the frame to the tank. Since that picture was taken, I welded that filler door assembly in to the box side, and all the body and paint is done.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
I am doing a little different approach. I didn't like the fact have having to open the tailgate all the time. I also seen were somebody modified the side marker open to use as a filler. But I am using factory 68 side markers and they don't work that mod. So I found a motorcycle weld in bung and pop out cap to put in the step side fender. I will paint the same color as the truck so it should not be as noticeable.
Not an answer to your question but just another idea

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
That is a Boyd's tank which has the inlet already welded in. He makes a side fill and a top fill for our trucks. TOP notch tanks and are not bad prices. Not sure how the brothers tanks work.
I used a 1.5" exhaust pipe had it bent to about 80 degrees and expanded the other end to 2" to match the tank inlet. I also had to cut a notch out of the bedside to fit the pipe through. Then I am going to use a 1.5" 90 rubber fuel hose to connect the cap and pipe together. In my mock up it work extremely well. I am also using 55-59 tail lights done low. So if using a stock light it might not work as well. Pic of cap

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
Sorry to revive an old post, but I'm curious if you guys made your own fuel lines when you mounted your Boyds tank, or did you make your own? Getting ready to dive into this for my truck. Thanks!

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
What are you running Brad?....I reused 24 yr old plastic lines for my 93 TBI.. (they are in excellent condition), motor fuel lines, modified OEM sender and pump. If you have a good flaring tool get a 25 ft roll of fuel line and make your own.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
I bought a 25' roll of 1/2" aluminum line from Summit Racing and built mine. I used braided SS hose and -8 AN fittings at each end. I had my Boyd tank made with a 1/2" npt bung for the fuel line instead of the 3/8" they come with.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
I just finished this install a few months ago. I picked up a few steel lines from autozone, in stock, ran them along the frame rail. I was also going in tank electric pump for a fitech install. It was fairly easy to install. I used fuel injection hose to run from tank to steel line.
Secured with a couple of rubber lines hose clamps, it turned out really clean. The tank got mounted below the frame rail with 4 stainless steel bolts, and 4 extra thick rubber washers between the tank and frame. The tank is a top fill, and I used a hole saw in the bed floor. I slit a rubber fuel line and pressed it onto the hole edges. This truck doesn't ever haul more than a bike or skateboard. |

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
68is4me I am looking to install my Boyd's tank very similar to how you installed yours. Question for you... I also have a 1 1/2 ID inch fuel filler hose running from the filler neck and am looking for a section of 1 1/2 OD exhaust pipe that is like the one you have that increases in size at the tank end to 2 inch OD to hook into the tank with a short section of filler hose like you have but I can NOT find anything at all like that. Did you get your section of exhaust pipe from a muffler / exhaust shop and is it pretty common and easy for them to bend and expand the end from 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch? 1/2 and inch sounds like a lot to expand

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?
Go here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/suN7jsh4uRJqrdzN8 Scroll down toward the bottom, you will find install pics of the tank. It doesn't hang that low, you cant see it behind the rear bumper. As far as how it mounts, those welds on the tank tabs in combination with a few grade 5 or 8 bolts that thing isn't ever going anywhere, and if it does, I'm sure boyd would stand behind his product. I can take a few more pictures of it at right height under the rear of the truck if someone would like. |
