How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

Since the tabs are welded on the side of the tank does that mean you bolt the tabs to the bottom part of the frame? Shouldnt the tabs sit in the frame?

This is the tank I bought.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

I thought the same thing. However, the unit I have was set up to the frame bottom and had 3 holes drilled on each side throught the tab and frame, then bolted to the frame.. It's rock solid that way.

I have a Boyd Welding tank. I bolted mine to the bottom of the frame with 3/8 stainless steel hardware, 4 bolts on each side.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

So its been two months and I still havent mounted my tank. I have mocked it up and it looks like it will sit REALLY low. Does anyone have a pic of their tank mounted up from the bottom. Id like to see if your looks this low too.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

Working on mine now. Mines a C20 though, so it sits high. The tank bottom is still above the Dana 60 axle tubes. There were 3 holes in the bottom flange of my frame, I'm just going to use those. Trying to figure how to mark the tank flange at those holes. My bed is still on. I'll try and get pics today what I do. Jim

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

I have the boyd tank installed on mine and it's bolted to the bottom of the frame. No real shot of it, but here's a rear shot and you can't see it:

Heres' a side shot too. You can kind of see it through the wheels, but I don't think it's too low to be concerned with.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

Got my tank flanges marked and drilled. Held it up with a floor jack and spaced it from back crossmember with paint stirrers. Then sprayed black paint down between top frame rail and side of tank. Paint made it into holes in frame onto tank flanges. Made some punch marks in the paint circles and drilled out to 9/16 hole. Used 6 half inch bolts with large washers to mount. It barely touches the front crossmember in the one corner, so I'll grind an 1/8 inch off the crossmember to clearance it. Got to pull back out tomorrow so I can weld a bracket on top for filter/regulator and pie cut fill tube to angle it up some to clear frame. Then make up hoses and tubes for plumbing. And wiring for power to pump and level sender. Pics tomorrow. Left my camera at shop. Jim

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

I think I'm going to call or e-mail Boyds and ask them to move the filler tube toward the front 1/2 inch and raise the Horizontal tube about 1/2 inch. This would clear the frame rail completely and also that dang triangle frame brace in that corner. Snagged it every time I raised the tank into place. Oh yeh. This would have been much easier with the bed off and no garage door at my bumper. Jim

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

Heres how I mounted my Boyd tank. I took a flat piece of metal 1/4" x 1-1/2" drilled 3 holes in it that matched 3 holes on the alum. flange (actually clamped the pieces together and drilled them both at the same time so I knew the holes would line up) and welded nuts over the holes in the flat strap. Placed the flat strap inside the frame rails lined up over the 3 holes drilled in the frame and lifted my tank up with a floor jack. lined up the bolts and tightened them up. I also used a thin piece of rubber between the alum. flange and the frame. Oh, BTW I drilled the holes in the tank flanges and then raised it up in place then marked the holes for the frame.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

I ended up using two of the existing holes that were in my frame on each side and drilling one new hole on each side. Looks like the tank fits PERFECT. I dont know why I waited so long to get the tank mounted. It was pretty easy. Here are a few pics.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

This is about as far as I have gotten with the tank. My next step is running fuel and break lines. I am hoping to do that in the next few weeks.

Has any one finished installing one of these? I would like to see how you ran the fuel lines.
Thanks

Any chance you could show how you did your filler door?

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

This is what I did when I mounted my Boyd's tank. I mounted the tank under the frame rail. I had to notch the frame rail to give me clearance for the filler tube to clear the bottom of the bed floor.

Re: How to install Boyd Welding gas tank?

This is where I got the fuel door. The gas cap has a flapper in it so you don't have to take the cap out to fuel up. http://www.haganauto.com/fuel_doors_gas_lid_s/5.htm

Yea go did thru the last few pages of my build thread, i'm also thinking about knocking out the rear cross member and sliding it inside the frame, but being a lifter 4X4 i'm not too worried.
