patina or no patina

When I was new to the world of fixing up hot rods and customs the only reason the old look with faded paint, primer spots, and rust was seen was because you couldn't afford a new or custom paint job, therefore I still like to see a nice paint job showing off great body work. The term Rat Rod to me is a Big Daddy Roth custom. Yes, I'm OLD.

ok, sorry about the poll. i will and more choices. i was curious to see what you guys thought of it, and looks like patina is losing. my 63 is kind of patina ing quicky. i guy before me painted part of it flat black and at the begining when he had it , it had the real patina. it look bad when i first had it ,so i finish painting it flatblack for now. i do want to a fade a way paint job. but im still in highschool, and have no extra money.

here are some pics of the palces looking patinaed, its from the lays of paint flaking off. i know not everyone likes patina and some dont like nice paint and everyone has the rights to there own opinion, but we dont need fight which is better, either you like it or you dont. if you dont like patina then dont look at it!!

I still think if you're very low on funds, you do what you have to do - no shame.

I myself like the look of black, whether it's flat, satin, or gloss.

yeah who cares what I or others think, I was being abnormally harsh to people who want to just cover up with flat black because its the trend. If thats your hearts desire, do what you like!

I prefer nice glossy black ,flatblack second real pantina third but unfortunately some people consider surface rust patina.

I didnt see one of the choices was flat black. I think flat black is the choice if you want to look exactly like everyone else. given that you are asking between fauxtina and flat black, that may be what you are going for but I think the only "statement" flat black makes any more is letting everyone know that you had 30 dollars for some spray paint. my cruddy opinion, but it is just an opinion.

I also know that some guys prefer to see glossy paint jobs but the economy of that is lost on my wallet and my truck. I am not looking to more than double my investment by achieving arrow straightness and shiny paint so everything else can look terrible by comparison. I'll soft strip it and fix the major holes and big dents stuff and then "driver quality" shoot it semi gloss powder blue (the original color in the jambs, semi gloss so the body waves dont show, powder blue so it is a single color), but thats as far as I am going with mine. I figure 1200 bucks at the outset, thats with stripping.

I'm considering this exact idea for Cecilia if I get her primer off this spring and hate the patina that forms/has formed underneath. I just fell into a fantastic take-your-face-off power washer for the job too.

If it looks like crap then I'll be doing a few minor bodywork things and shooting it flat or semi-gloss myself for a total cost of "as close to nothing as my tight scottish butt can get".

There are members here who have flat black trucks.
I would think a better way to say it is; 'You personally don't like flat black'

good for you! DIY is the best.

and it doesnt have to cost millions of dollars to get better than fby (flatblackyuk), this was my galaxie and it cost 1200 to scuff up and shoot semi flat.

it was a lot straighter than my truck but I also dropped it off before leaving on vacation and picked it up when I got back. the truck I will do a lot of prep myself.

flat black sure is popular, not just on 60s trucks but everything. Thankfully no one has asked me to pay for any of those paintjobs or I would have refused. when its my money, it wont be flat black. when its your money, paint it whatever you like and to heck with what I think!

I only like real, original paint, thin/sunburnt patina. It's not something you can replicate. I'm also tired of cheap flat black "paint jobs"- the ones where there's little or no prep work and its only done to cover up whatever ugliness was underneath. Real flat black paint is okay but with all the prep work involved, why not pick a more original color and use flattened clear?

I like gloss paint and satin paints. I dont like rust. Original paint is good even if its fading but if its rusting then its time for paint or atleast sand down the arears and touch them up. We dont need body parts flyin off on the freeway onto someones windshield or face.

Seeing your pics, I see your predicament.
You're low on funds and you want your truck to look other than it looks now.
You asked about real patina, but I think you're out for that option.
You mention flat black because that's what the previous owner started.
You're other option you mention is faux-patina.

So, it appears you're a long way from an actual paintjob.

I think what you're asking is;
What can you do to cover up what you have - to protect the exposed metal and bondo, until you can do it right?

I think you're black with the green showing through isn't a bad look, and wouldn't take much for funds to get that look overall.
Although, in these pics, because the black is wet, it might look better with a little gloss.
That would be a personal preference.
Either way, I can see it having a pretty cool look being black with the green wearing through.

Ive made my feelings known in posts like these in the past.
Ive been doing this for 25yrs.
Ive had many shiney nicely done cars/trucks in that time.
Ive had plenty of primered cars/trucks
And several self "weathered" trucks.

Do whatever makes you happy...

I'll give ya 4 examples of my previous rides.

The black flamed 53 was perfect. Perfect paint, you could eat off undercarriage, under hood etc.

The blue "weathered" 54 was self made. Actually, my wife did 90% of it.

The red 1960 "Drag City" truck was a 250 dollar Ford fleet red basecoat with no clear, to give a satin finish.

The blue 64 was 40 dollars worth of spray-bomb.

You decide what makes you smile!
