Re: patina or no patina

Lately, "patina" seems to mean just about anything but a nice paint job. I say, if you are lucky enough to have had mother nature work her subtle magic on your factory paint, then don't touch it and let it show. Otherwise, knock your self out on whatever you think might look good. You can always sand it off and go again until it's right, right?

Re: patina or no patina

I'm trying to figure out the rear window on the stepside with the girl.
It looks bigger than a small window, yet smaller than a big window.

Re: patina or no patina

I could not vote because you didn't offer a paint it vote. But I wanted to offer my opinion FWIW.

Real patina is cool until you can afford paint, but fake patina is just wrong.

My truck has real years-earned patina that everyone thinks is cool, but I can't wait to paint it and make it slick.

Ditto. Ok maybe its just me but I cant see putting the time and effort to make a new paint job look like an old neglected one.
That beeing said I do like the look of the old company.speed shop ,farm truck .

you're talking about fake patina?
I agree with others above.... NO
But, if it already has natural patina, leave it alone.

Re: patina or no patina

No patina for me. Although I do agree that if it original paint and the truck is not rotted out, then leave it if you like it.

I take a lot of pride in body work and paint and think it takes something special to lay out a nicer than factory paint job on any vehicle.

I also do not care for fake patina, flat and semi gloss black. While we are on the subject, I am also burned out with the term "rat rod". Is every thing built before 1990 have to be a rat rod? I think it is a term that is way over used.

I don't like the idea of metal being exposed to the elements.
But I respect the look of real patina.
I also like these faux-patina jobs:

Agreed. I like the look of the original paint all burned off, faded, and lacquer-checked. You can't duplicate that, it takes decades of natural weathering. I can spot a fake patina a mile away, and they usually look goofy because they try to patina new enamel or urethane, and it looks like it's been over-sanded in all the wrong places.

NOTHING patinas like nitrocellulose lacquer.

Re: patina or no patina

We were just discussing in another thread how different people have different tastes.
Some like one look, others like another, and then another.
We were saying in that other thread that this diversity of tastes, and how those in these forums don't criticize another's tastes, is what makes this forum enjoyable.

I respect other's tastes by not telling them it looks crappy, because it doesn't look crappy to them.
