Should I purchase a 80's chev 4x4 with a 4'' lift?
I was wondering if this sounds like a good deal. Some guy has a 1980 chevy 4x4 pickup with a 4 inch body lift, 36" super swampers( 2 are good). The truck has a 350 with a cam, headers, and aluminum intake. Its got a turbo400 tranny. Its got a roll bar with lights, custom front and back bumpers. He's asking $1500 Canadian. Let me know what you think?

4" body lift? i'd have to look it over VERY carefully. anybody who installs a 4" bodylift is likely to have hacked the rest of the truck to pieces. if you do end up getting it, my first bit of advice, DITCH THAT BODY LIFT! its flat out dangerous.

about 1200 USD
Check it over very carefully, make sure that the body isn't too badly hacked up. Where are you at in Canada?

I was orginally looking for a 4x4 frame to put my 1986 chevy scottsdale 2wd 1/2 pickup on. I then found this truck that had a 4x4 frame and all the extra's. An 4" body lift is a bit extreme. Even the headers, aluminum intake is also a reason to get the truck. I just rebuild a 1988 GMC Sierra 1/2. I like the 73 to 87 trucks much better. So money is tight. I'm still in highschool, so money is a problem. I'm from Ontario.

4" body lift could be very dangerous, body lifts but much more stress on the mounting points and could crack or break them. But, long as anything hasn't been damaged yet I would get it and remove it and put a suspension lift on it if you still want the lift.
35" Radials will generally barely clear with 4" springs, but you could make 36s fit with some cutting, nothing extreme would be needed.

If its an 80 1/2 it should have a NP205 and you said that it has a Th400. This combo alone is worth half of the asking price.

Is the frame with 4x4, posi rear end, roll bar, 350 with the cam, headers and aluminum intake, turbo 400, and body worth 1500 canadian? I'm not sure whether the frame is 3/4 or 1/2. I would rather 3/4. Sounds like its a 1/2 ton because hes said its got a posi rear end. Let me know what you think. Thanks

4x4s didn't really come with a posi, they had gov-locs which is a locking type differential. But 1/2 tons didn't come with th400s, so if the th400 is factory then its probably a 3/4 ton. 3/4 ton trucks also came with locking rear axles.

Thanks alot, i'm looking at it after school tommorrow, so I'll see what its like. My dad has a 1987 3/4 4x4 suburban, i might just rebuild. Its not in too bad of shape, considering we stole some parts of it, like the barn doors for our 1978 3/4 4x4 suburban. Hopefully its a 3/4, maybe he's got a locker and got confused and called it a posi.

The other problem with body lifts that hasn't been mentioned (even though everyone knows it) is the balance of the whole truck is off. I know someone else here will explain better, but basically instead of the whole chasis coming up, its just the body, and it throws everything off.

i would seriously pass on it, sounds like its a ragged piece of crap. aluminum intake and a show bar as a basis of a $1200 purchase? i dont know about you, but i would never dream of making a purchase based on parts that were less than 25% of the total price, its just pointless. oh, and if it is a bed mounted bar, which it probably is, it is not a roll bar, it is a show bar. they're never heavy enough to protect you in a rollover.

If you're just looking for a donner(sp) truck to get the 4x4 frame and this truck isn't in too bad of shape, I'd say go for it. Do like you said put you're 86 body on it and ditch that unsafe lift...

cant go wrong for the parts thats why I said it would be a steal if it is in any condition at all he can use the frame and get the cash back out of the rest of it.

All I need is the frame and i would use the headers, intake, frame and rims. I would sell the rest. I got fresh 350 with 70 000 Km on it, thats going in the 86 chevy.

Ah, I missed the part about just running the frame. Get some smaller wheels that won't rub the fenders and ditch the body. The body mounts can't possibly be any good... I'll be doing the same thing pretty quick, bolting my 2wd body to a 4x4 frame. I also want a 3/4 ton, but I'll be running a divorced dodge 205 and an electronic overdrive by the time I hook the 4x4 up.
