Hello ; New member
Hello everyone, I am glad i found this board there is alot of helpfull info here. I just bought a 68 chevy C10 short/step bed 350 auto, after a couple years of looking. I would like to run a few questions by everyone.
1. I have searched back posts and it appears to convert to power steering all i need is gearbox, rag joint and pitman arm from 79 or below, Right? 2. Same for power brakes. Plan to leave drum brakes on for now? 3. Steering column, are there any other columns that will fit close. looking for a newer column with tilt and ignition on column? 4. I have disassembled the truck starting to strip now. I am priming with spray cans as i go. question is when i am ready for final primer coats I will remove the can primer then what should i do to bare metal? ?Use some of the rust stuff or viniger or just reprime with a good primer? Thanks for any help |

Welcome to the board! You'll have to remove the spray can primer before the final primer coat to do it right. I always use white vinegar on any bare metal before priming.

Can I ask why you want to go to a column mounted ignition switch? If you just want to add a tilt, check out a late 70s(?) van tilt. Only minor mods to make it fit, and it looks original.

Welcome to the board.
For the power brakes, theres a rod that attaches to your break pedel you need to change. Theres also a bracket with a pivot inside it that you need to get out of a junk yard. Other than that just get a new booster and master cylinder from napa. If you change to discs then you'll need to change your porportioning valve too.

thanks for the info everyone. To the ingnition on column thing I plan to totally redo interior custom. If my idea works out there will be no access to the old ignition.

you'll have to strip off the spray bomb and then depending on how long you leave it bare metal I would use a conversion coating it kills any rust that has developed on the surface and then spray epoxy primer directly onto that and you will have an almost rust proof surface.

best way to do disc conversion
is to get hold of a 71-up truck and take entire engine cradle suspensin assembly and put it under your truck, i prefer 73-up hoses since pass through frame rails and are longer and less $$, but thats up to you, and you iwl be rerouting new brake lines because 71 up hoses and lines run up front of cradle instead of behind cradle on drum trucks, use a late 68-72 p/s pitman arm and any p/s box without the ram slave cylinder linkage type steering, late 68-79, can use 80-up box if you use metric thread O-ring style hoses,, sway bar from 64-87 also works, boosters for drum differ form disc, prop valves werent invented til 71, are just distribution blocks prior to 71, technically you wil be adding on a 71-up proportioning combination- valve not replacing it with a later one* columns from vans are 90% direct fit, anything else will take mods to make work,. not the case in 73-up trucks though, you sure you wanna tackle all the wiring mods to make dash ignition go away ? ?? welcome to the forum, good luck |
