Question 3 Questions

1. Where should I set the timing on a 1974 454 passenger car engine W/HEI ?

2. I am running headers on this engine. Should I put insulating boots over the plug wires to protect them from the heat ?

3. Should I put a heat shield on the starter ?

The first question is based on how the engine is built. The timeing is not the same on each engine. You will have to adjust it in order to get correct.

On the second question, If they are touching the headers then yes or you can adjust them to where they don't touch. I used some old plug wire boots. I just split the down the middle and placed them on the part of the wire that was touching the header.

On the third question. It all depends on how close your starter is to the header. I am assuming that it is close. It would probably be a good idea to get a cover or a wrap.

Anymore questions?

We set the timing up on our big blocks so that you get a total advance of 34-36 degrees and the timing is all in by 3,000 rpm.

Initial timing is set at 10-12 degrees btdc at idle, 22-24 degrees
mechanical advance for a total of 34-36 degrees. If necessary we will fine tune the setting but this is a good start.

I have a 402 in my truck with stock manifolds. I was going through starters every 6 months. I finally switched to one of the high torque mini starters last year and haven't had any trouble since. You might think about doing that.

You definitely want to put a shield on the starter and boots on the wires with headers.
