Alternator problems!!
Hi all, I went to start my truck earlier , and it seems as if the alternator has siezed up on me. As soon as I started it, the belt just slipped and squeeled, and the alternator will not turn freely. What sux is that the alternator is a chrome one wire set up. And its only about two years old. I have been noticing that the volt guage has been jumping up and down in the past few days. Could this be a bearing that could be changed out, or is the whole alternator junk? Or could I possibly change out the chrome case? Thanx in advance.

You might try and take it to a local alternator shop and get a quote for a rebuild. They have the knowledge and equipment to diagnose these types of problems. It very may well be a small problem, but most shops would want to put a rebuild on it so that they could warranty their work. You might want to check two or three shops for price and turnaround time and warranty. The full rebuild will probably be close to the replacement value. If you are in a bind for transportation find an old core and get one from a local parts house to use until you can afford to get the chrome one redone. Then you will have a spare for the next time.

I've peiced together a lot of altenators most cases are inner changable. Ive never had a chrome one though. I usally take all my junk parts and stick it together as a core not the most onitsable thing in the world but then Ive got more than One the tractors ussually burn one up a year.

Advance Auto Parts carries alternator parts. I have a chrome 1 wire alternator and the alternator splits easy. Pull off the alternator fan and pulley. You might not have to do this, but I did just in case. It is easier to pull the pulley off if the alternator is still together. Remove the four bolts that hold the case together. Carefully pry the cases apart; the armature should stay with the front case half. You may have problems here since yours is siezed. Don't pry too hard or you will chip the crome on the cases. The alternator should seperate relatively easy. Remove the three nuts that hold the winding wires to the rectifier and carefully pry the windings from the back case. That is far as I tore mine down. I replaced the diode in hopes to fix mine and it didn't work. Notice the pin holes in the brush holders and in the back of the case. They hold down the brushes during reassembly. I hope the bearings are a quick fix for you.
