Tires
Does anyone have any Michelin XL's or XZL's laying around they wanna get rid of? Looking for the 9.00x16 version. OR does anyone know where I might be able to find them? I know they're getting harder and harder to come by, but I thought i'd ask.
Thanks, Dan.

Anyone?
Or if not these tires, can anyone recommend a 34"-37" tall tire that will fit on stock 16"x7" wide wheels?

Thanks for the tip, but i've been looking there already. Most the guys over there don't run the 9.00x16's, they run the 11.00x16's or bigger. Guess i'll keep looking.

After searching the web it kinda looks like either the Q78's or Swamper SSR's will be my choices that are available off the shelf. The 295's are about the same size as my 255 85 16's that I have on there now and I would like to go bigger. I have just been reading some really good reviews of the Michelin's and was hoping I could pick some up. There is a set on Ebay, but the buy it now price is 1800.00 which I think is a little outrageous. I had Buckshot's on my 73' and wasn't too impressed with the wear, but oh well.

I was also looking for 9.00x 16 for my blue 71 1-ton. You might try over at the power wagon forum or try this for some good info:
http://www.garbee.net/~cabell/photos5.htm There are links in the article to resources for the tire you are looking for as well as some other options. I was leaning towards the STA McCreary SuperLug 9.00x16 tires. They should fit just fine on your 16x7 wheels. Let me know if you need more info. |

That's the website that got me thinking of these tires Tom. I did some calling around and most of those tires are bias ply, and I would like a radial. From the research I did it looks like Buckshots or SSR's are my only options for what i'm looking for. Where in Oregon are you?

danho, I think your local Les Scwab can order the Buckshot Mudders for you or they will run you around $119 from National Tire & Wheel. If you do a lot of gravel Forest Service and BLM roads I wouldn't expect more than 20,000 miles out of them though. Since you're in Prineville you might try a local farm and agriculture supply - that's where the guys in the article I mentioned before were getting their tires. FYI - I am located in Medford.

Well according to my calculations, National Tire and Wheel wants 169.81 each for the Q78 Buckshot's. If you found em for 119.00 shoot me a link, would'nt mind saving 200 bucks. I've called EVERYBODY local to get tire info and this is what I have come up with, just posting this here to see if anyone might have some ideas. Sounds like were at a dead end, but oh well.
Tom, I grew up in Medford (23 years), I go down there all the time to visit family. Wouldn't mind stopping by to check out your ride sometime. Thanks again guys.

Prineville
I would think you might get led out of town without a set of Schwab tires!! Prineville is the home of Les Schwab tires and Les himself!! They do sell BFG's now in addition to their other ones. 1 man in 1 generation has I believe over 300 stores now in western states. These guys hussle for the customers. I try to shop therer when I can. Sometimes I end up picking a different tire for looks, etc. but always like to use these guys when possible.

Oh trust me Bob, I have donated many a check to Les and his gang and they do good work. I'm just looking for something a little different this time than their name brand. Good to talk to ya though, I've heard alot about you from Dana. I'm the guy who bought that bed from him after about a year and a half of thinking about it. Took that long to wear the wife down.
Dan.

Tires
Hope most of what Dana said was good and true!! That was/is a nice bed. Was pondering it back then too. I like the swampers and gumbo mudders for looks when there are new too, nut sure what too many miles on AC would do though. I saw a tough looking older jeep yesterday with those type of tire. Looked like the old 9.00 16 type/size. Looked unstoppable and had a v8 under hood too. Those were the days yrs ago with a tank of gas and a couple of friends out "exploring" in a tough old truck, jeep, bronco or whatever someone had.

Some comments in regards to Les Scwab tires. We use their store brand tires on all our state fleet trucks and I have yet to see one get more than 20K miles on Forest Service & BLM roads. I had a set on my personal truck and have heard several others complain too, and they do not stand behind their warranty, when these tires (including TOYO) are supposed to get 60 K miles. I put BFG All-Terrrains on my truck from another store back in 1997 and they have many miles left in them.
