Best way to move leaf spring perches?
Never done this before...do you reuse the old ones, or where do you get new ones?

If you have access to a plasma cutter you can probably salvage the old ones. If they are the cast type, probably can't cut them off clean enough to reuse.
If they are not cast, patience and a grinder will get the old ones off. I had to remove the spring perches on a 78 K20 axle to fit my 70 K5. I had a buddy remove the old with his plasma cutter when I finally gave up with my grinder. Had him also cut me some new spring perches - it's good to have a friend with a plasma cutter!

Can you buy new ones, or how do you make new ones? Unfortunately, i don't have access to a plasma cutter at the moment.

Get a cut-off wheel for your grinder and cut them out that way. Then switch to the grinding wheel and grind the rest of it off. A few wheels, a face shield, ear plugs and a whole lot of patience gets the job done. You can get new ones from the company JIMs70GMC suggested or I think even your local 4WheelParts has some. Have fun!

I have the grinder and all the wheels I need. I'm probably going to buy a set from Tim at ShakerBuilt this evening. Thanks for the help guys. Oh, when I go to install the new perches, I know I need to set the pinion angle first. My truck is a stock '61 4x4 with no lift, short wide box with the t-221 divorced tcase. I never thought to check the angle of the original axle. I still have it, so would it be easiest to just roll that one back under, then set the new one and weld it up? Sorry for all the questions...just want to get this right the first time.
Thanks, Matt |

I'm just east of Dallas. Currently the apache is a bare frame on jack stands. I'll have to get my pictures resized first so I can post them. But, I'm nearly ready to put the frame back together.
